White Buffalo needs light/sound design

1/30/2018

Michael Hays, director, is still looking for a lighting and sound designer(s) for the upcoming production of "White Buffalo", which opens February 22 on Riverwalk’s Black Box Stage.

Both positions are very significant, and should be extremely rewarding. Please contact Michael at [email protected], or text him at (517) 703-3875, or on Facebook.

In addition, music is required throughout the show, and Michael would love for all of the music...which is strongly Native American...to be live. If anyone is familiar with Native American chants, drum circles, powwows, flute and drum playing, please contact Michael, as well.

LUNGS

1/28/2018

This was something different for me —attending a “media event” at Wharton Center to find out about this upcoming LUNGS show. I learned that it will indeed be something different for the audience as well.

It features just two actors, no set, and some of the audience seated onstage. Patrons snagging those seats will have an extra intimate experience of this young couple’s relationship as they consider whether or not to have a child. The conversation spirals into a series of existential and often funny discussions about what they know life to be. This innovative new production rounds out Wharton Center’s new “Illuminate" series.

LUNGS is directed by Bert Goldstein, MSU's director of Wharton Center Institute for Arts & Creativity. He has brought in two brilliant, professional actors now cramming their brains with a “challenging-in-the-best-way" script by playwright Duncan Macmillan. It is written in a realistic, overlapping style, complete with specific numbers of-um's-and a’s, so it fits together like poetry or music, creating "crackling dialogue with deep, universal resonance.”

It was a pleasure to meet the two brave actors and eavesdrop on the interviews they taped with local media CAMTV which is available to view online on YouTube and Facebook and Meridian News Now at 11:30 Monday, January 29 on Comcast Channel 21 or HomeTV.net

Eric Gilde (ericgilde.com) is a Yale-educated NYC actor with an impressive resumé. He auditioned via Skype and was “married” to his new stage wife Paige Hernandez. They just met a few days ago and are bonding over this “genius” script they both love. Paige is a multidisciplinary artist, performer, director, choreographer and playwright, previously directed by Goldstein at Wharton Center in the one-woman show, Shape of a Girl. With her company, B-Fly Entertainment, Paige continues to develop and tour original work. http://www.paigehernandez.com

Annie is coming!

2/16-18 - The Blue Light Players are proud to present Annie!

This classic musical, inspired by the popular comic strip character, Little Orphan Annie, is set in the Depression era of the 1930's. Annie (Katie Schupbach), an orphan living in Miss Hannigan's (Jean Burk) orphanage, finds herself living in the lap of luxury with billionaire tycoon, Oliver Warbucks (Mike Stewart). Unlike most of the other children at the orphanage, spunky Annie believes that her parents are still alive and will one day return to claim her. So when Mr. Warbucks offers to adopt her, she asks the most powerful man in America to help find her real mom and dad instead, and he agrees.

Assisted by his lovely secretary, Grace (Kathryn Mulcahy), Warbucks offers a very large reward for anyone who can prove they are Annie's parents. The reward attracts the attention of con artists Rooster (Dale Williams), Lily (Caitlyn Christenson) and the wicked Miss Hannigan, who hatch a plot to kidnap Annie and take the $50,000 reward. However, there is nothing to fear, this family-friendly musical has a happy ending for Annie, Daddy Warbucks and the whole gang; including Annie's loveable dog, Sandy (Poppy).

Performances are at 7pm on February 16th and 17th, and 4pm on February 18th at the Albert A. White Auditorium, 819 Abbot Rd., in East Lansing. Tickets are $15/each, and all seats are reserved. The seats are filling rapidly for this production, and you won't want to miss out on seeing our 49 talented cast members ranging in age from 7-70+ bring this musical to life. Peppermint Creek CHRISTIANS at Sycamore Church

1/18/2018

2/1-11 - Peppermint Creek Theatre Brings “The Christians” to Lansing

"The Christians", produced in partnership (and performed at) Sycamore Creek Church in Lansing, is a new play by award-winning playwright Lucas Hnath play focused on faith in modern America.  The play centers around Pastor Paul who has spent 20 years successfully growing his church from a small storefront to a gleaming megachurch, but now he fears that there may be a crack in the theological foundation. As he shares his new belief in the nature of salvation, the message is met with surprise and then growing trepidation from his closest confidantes in the congregation, threatening to create a schism within the church. Playwright Lucas Hnath’s fascinating new play looks with great complexity and compassion at the relationship between belief and behavior—and its evenhanded, unbiased take on faith in modern America can be appreciated no matter what you believe.

Artistic Director Chad Swan-Badgero raves about the play, “At Peppermint Creek, we are constantly looking for plays that will drive people to think more deeply, more intensely, and more bravely about the world and society we live in, while doing so in an even-handed way.  The Christians is one of the most balanced and thoughtful plays I’ve ever directed (or read for that matter).  I think most Americans have a pretty solidified approach to faith and organized religion.  And yet this play manages to illustrate all sides of the faith topic in a way that pushes our thinking and boundaries in a gratifying, dramatic way.  And we are thrilled to be performing this show, which takes place in a church, at a local Lansing church.  Sycamore Creek Church has proven to be an excellent partner in this endeavor due to their curious, compassionate, and creative approach to faith.”

"The Christians" will take place at Sycamore Creek Church’s south Lansing venue, 1919 South Pennsylvania  This production is generously underwritten by Foster Swift Collins and Smith Law Firm, Sam & Mary Austin, and Joan & Jerry Mattson. This production features Blake Bowen, Bethany Jeffery, Heather Lewis, Zach Riley and Michael Shalley.
