Uh-Oh, Here Comes Christmas

Uh Oh, Here Comes Christmas December 6 and 7

Since 2009,Homegrown Productions in St. Johnshas added to the holiday spirit in our community with a musical variety show. This year we are proud to present “Uh Oh, Here Comes Christmas,” a play based on the books by Robert Fulghum. Heartwarming stories and musical interludes look at the struggle to find the spirit of the holidays amid the avalanche of commercialism, stress and chaos that crashes down every December. Delightful stories include hilarious musings about a love/hate relationship with the vibrant poinsettia that arrives in most homes every December and hangs on long after the holidays have ended; and a beautiful, deeply moving tribute to the winter solstice, celebrating nature's precious annual gift of rebirth.

“Uh, Oh, Here Comes Christmas” is directed by Beth Webb and Susan DeRosa.

This year’s cast members are Sara Craft, Susan DeRosa, Jan Ross, Darryl Schmitz, Beth Webb, and Tom Webb. This is a family friendly show.

Performances are December 6 and 7 at 7:30 pm

at the Wilson Center Auditorium, 101 W. Cass St. Tickets are $10 at the door.

11/27/2019

December 3 from 10am to 10pm
Williamston Theatre is doing our Giving Tuesday Day of Theatre Event.  Table readings of 6 plays throughout the day.  Free event.
To launch the season of giving, the Williamston Theatre gives back! We’ll be presenting readings of six plays – an entire season in a day. We begin at 10am and run through 10pm. Come for one play, or stay for them all. This event is FREE and open to the public, no reservations are necessary. Information will be available in our lobby on several local charities doing amazing work in our community. Some WT favorites who will be on the stage will include: Katherine Banks, Casaundra Freeman, Tobin Hissong, John Lepard, Michael Lopetrone, and Emily Sutton-Smith.
Plays to look forward to…
10am
Tracy Jones by Stephen Kaplan
Tracy Jones has rented out the back “party room” of Jones Street Bar and Grill: The Place for Wings and Things, a typical chain restaurant. Tracy Jones is throwing a party to which she’s invited every woman in the world who is also named Tracy Jones. Tracy Jones has been sitting for over an hour alone, nursing her Diet Coke, waiting for any other Tracy Joneses to show up. Tracy Jones’ epic loneliness is about to be tested beyond anything she ever imagined. Featuring: Casaundra Freeman, John Lepard, Anna Ryzenga and Emily Sutton-Smith
Noon
Seven Homeless Mammoths Wander New England by Madeleine George
Dean Wreen is not having a good week. Her college is in dire financial straits and a plan to close its tiny, all-but-forgotten natural history museum is sending unexpected shock waves across campus and out into the local community. Town-gown relations are in tatters! The local newspaper is erupting in protest! Even the awful, historically inaccurate dioramas in the museum have started mouthing off! A screwball sex comedy about the perils of monogamy, certainty, and academic administration. Featuring Katherine Banks, Casaundra Freeman, Alysia Kolascz, Tobin Hissong, and Michael Lopetrone.
2pm
SHOCK! The Spine-Tingling Tale of Miss Spidra by Joseph Zettelmaier

Her fans never knew Joyce Billings. To them, she was Miss Spidra, campy host of “The Night Parlor,” Toledo’s midnight horror movie show. Starting as a struggling actress trying to make her mark, Joyce finds herself becoming an icon, a celebrity. But her efforts to keep her beloved show alive cost her more than she could have guessed. Framed against a documentary about her life, Miss Spidra’s journey through the monster craze of the 60s asks what lines one will cross to succeed. Featuring Katherine Banks, Aral Gribble, Casaundra Freeman, Michael Lopetrone, Heather Mahoney, and Christine Purchis.
4pm
Creating Claire by Joe DiPietro
Employed as a docent at a natural history museum, nice, middle-aged Claire comes under fire when her tour-guide patter deviates from the strict scientific beliefs of her formidable supervisor and heads down a path that espouses intelligent design. Claire’s spiritual slant attracts extra visitors but soon leads to legal action. A powerful exploration of the supernova that results when science, faith and politics collide. Featuring Casaundra Freeman, Tobin Hissong, Heather Mahoney, and Chris Purchis.
6pm
Fortune by Deborah Zoe Laufer
Maude, a lonely, surly, storefront psychic has accepted that love is not in the cards for her. She can see the future and knows this to be true. But when Jeremy, a despondent love-hungry accountant threatens to kill himself if she sees no love for him, she must wrestle with fate, and in changing his destiny, change her own. Featuring Katherine Banks and Aral Gribble.
8pm
Maytag Virgin by Audrey Cefaly
A classic Southern love story. Maytag Virgin follows Alabama school teacher Lizzy Nash and her new neighbor, Jack Key, over the year following the tragic death of Lizzy’s husband. The play explores the ideas of inertia and self-enlightenment, and the bridge between the two. Featuring John Lepard and Emily Sutton-Smith.

Holiday Singers Needed

11/27/2019

Hello,
I'm part of a theater group that is going a play running two weekends, Dec 6-8 and 13-15 (Friday and Saturdays at 7:00, Sundays at 2:00).  It's a short Christmas show (North Pole Radio Hour) and we were hoping to have enough cast to do a pre-show as well as the production.  We don't.

SO, I'm looking for SATB quartets to help us carry the first half hour with Christmas songs (not carols).  If I can have one quartet at each performance, that would be ideal.  If you can help make a quartet (I'll put them all together, just let me know your interest) for a least one show (two would be GREAT) please let me know.  mailto:nancy.sisson@comcast.net  If you know anyone who can sing that can help in this, please forward this to them and copy me in the conversation.
Rehearsals would be one night, either Dec 10 or 11 (6:30-8:00ish).  I'll have music for you there.  Oh, you'll be singing acapella (thus I need people who know how to sing a part).  Double Oh - It's at the Mason Historical Society 200 E Oak St, Mason, MI 48854.  I have a minivan and can take some with me every night if needed.

Thank you for your consideration.  Have a beautiful Thanksgiving.

SEEKING PLAYWRIGHTS FOR THE 24th ANNUAL YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL

Michigan high school students who have a passion for playwriting are invited to submit a one-act play for the 24th annual juried competition, Wharton Center’s Young Playwrights Festival (YPF).
This program of Wharton Center Institute for Arts & Creativity brings student works alive on the Pasant Theatre stage. Twelve semi-finalists will be chosen out of all submitted scripts. A jury will select six finalists out of the twelve, and these finalists will have their one-act plays produced at Wharton Center. A professional theatre mentor will be assigned to each student to assist in revising the play. Michigan State University’s Department of Theatre students will serve as actors for the plays. The six finalists will each receive a $200 award for their winning works, and the other six semi-finalists will receive a $100 award.

In the spring of 2020, the six winning plays will be performed two times. The first performance is on Saturday, May 9, at 2:00 p.m.; it is free and open to the public. The second performance on Monday, May 11, at 10:00 a.m. is a free high school performance; all sponsoring teachers are encouraged to attend.

To be eligible for this unique program:
    • Students must be a Michigan high school student (grades 9-12)
    • Students must be sponsored by a teacher willing to serve as the liaison between Wharton Center, the school, and the student applicant.
    • Students must submit an application form with script. Parent, sponsoring teacher and student signatures are required.
    • Finalists must be willing to work with an assigned professional theatre mentor to review their play; writers who cannot commit to revising their plays will have their eligibility revoked.
All rules and guidelines for the program can be found at http://www.whartoncenter.com/ypf. All one-act plays must be submitted electronically as a Microsoft Word document by Monday, December 2, 2019.
Professional mentors for 2020 include:
Janice Akers – Artistic Director, Theater Emory, Emory University
Thomas Coté – Artistic Director, The Workshop Theater, New York City
Joe Giardina – New York City Theater Artist
Eric Gilde – NYC-based Actor and Playwright
Pam Sterling – Associate Professor of Theatre, Arizona State University Elizabeth Wong – LA-based Playwright
The Young Playwrights Festival is sponsored by University Outreach and Engagement; MSU Federal Credit Union; and Wharton Center Inner Circle

Slip and Fall - one night only!

SPECIAL EVENT - one night only - Saturday, November 9 at Riverwalk Theatre
SLIP and FALL
by Roger Rochowiak
Staged Reading (Admission by Donation)
7 pm Saturday, November 9

What do you do when you fall on the ice and blow-out your kneecap? Then two months later your heart decides to slow itself down to a very slow beat, thus making it mandatory to have a new best friend by the name of “Pacemaker.” You write a play. No, better yet, you write a “comedy” about everything that transpired in the course of these two events. Take my word for it, there is humor in a hospital. It's a good thing that laughter is good medicine.

Featuring: Tina Brenner, Shannon Broadwell, Laura Croff, Joe Dickson, Brian Farnham, Carol Ferris, James Houska, Jeff Magnuson, Bob Murrell, Bob Purosky, Amy Rickett, Artis White, Adam Woolsey, and Jane and Mark Zussman.

This will be open to the public with a free-will offering for Riverwalk Theatre. A film crew will be filming this to be used as a documentary.

ONE more chance to see APPLES...

11/2/2019

ONE more show - 2pm tomorrow (today?) Sunday, November 3
APPLES IN WINTER

This one-woman, pie-making performance is a triumph for rarely seen actress Paige Tufford who is usually found behind the scenes at LCC and Renegade Theatre Festival.

Wow.

If you are a mother of sons you will cry. It’s a remarkable hour that deserves a full house.

I know there are a lot of other thoughtful shows going on at the same time, but this one is “Thespie Worthy” in my opinion (though I’m not on the committee anymore and my opinion doesn’t count for real Thespies.) ONE MORE CHANCE.

...or you can get tickets at the door at the Robin Theatre in Reo Town 1105 S Washington Ave, Lansing, MI 48910 - 2pm Sunday November 3.
