About In this heartwarming and humorous memory play with music (traditional hymns and carols) set at Christmas, a writer recalls his boyhood and the Oklahoma homestead his family lost to the dust bowl. They spent the hard scrabble winter of 1934 in Kentucky with an elderly aunt and uncle. The boy Jamie (who appears with the adult writer James) looks for Christmas in the woods and finds a wounded rabbit and a mysterious old woman. He responds to her bitterness with kindness and they exchange the real gifts of Christmas.

MSU Department of Theatre Freshmen perform Annual Improv Comedy Showcase - Together We Will Improvise

First-year students from the Michigan State University Department Theatre take on improv comedy in the 15th annual Freshman Showcase: Together We Will Improvise. Performance dates are December 2-5 in Studio 60 of the Auditorium Building. Attendees must be masked for the health and safety of our students.

Together We Will Improvise is a light-hearted evening of improvisation to bond the Department of Theatre freshmen on their creative journey through undergrad. The actors will take suggestions from the audience to create a spontaneous, collaborative performance.

Throughout the fall semester, the students attended weekly rehearsals with director Sarah Hendrickson to learn improv comedy skills, build teams, and prepare for the show. Hendrickson says the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic means students are more prepared than ever to embrace the challenges of improv comedy.

“We are in a constantly changing environment that is putting our improvisational skills to the test,” Hendrickson said. “Adapting and surviving in a new world requires courage and imagination, and our freshmen are full of it! The students have done an amazing job preparing for this show. It's been wonderful watching them all grow closer and bond through the rehearsal process.”

Tickets for Together We Will Improvise are $20 for general admission, $18 for MSU faculty and staff and seniors, and $10 for students. Tickets are available online at http://whartoncenter.com, at the Wharton Center box office, or by calling 1-800-WHARTON.

Keep Summer Circle Free

11/19/2021

Hello G.L.U.T. Readers:

In the past, you may have attended Summer Circle Theatre outdoors, behind the MSU Auditorium Building. If so, we thank you for being part of our SCT family.

These past two summers have been heart-breaking for us not to be able to follow our mission of presenting shows, the kids camp, and activities like we have been doing for 60 years-- all free to community members. Our donations on which we depend have understandably been down during our hiatus, but we plan to return with a full slate of FREE shows and more.

Over the past decade, we have nearly doubled our programming but our financial support from the University remains unchanged. In that time we have become a fully professional company paying our actors (including community actors), designers, stage managers, and more. But funding is limited so we are hoping you can help keep Summer Circle Theatre free by donating to this site as part of our Giving Tuesday campaign. Please share the link with other SCT aficionados.

Peppermint Creek Theatre Company is proud to be premiering the first full, in-person production since the pandemic began in March 2020!

All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914recounts an astounding moment in history when Allied and German soldiers laid down their arms to celebrate Christmas together, sharing food and drink, playing soccer, singing carols and burying each other’s dead. In some places along the Western Front the truce lasted a single night, and in others it endured until New Year’s Day.

This dramatic re-telling weaves together firsthand accounts by 30 World War I soldiers with music including patriotic tunes, trench songs and Christmas carols. The cast includes ten local singers performing the 90-minute production completely accapella. This performance will be presented free of charge at four different community locations:

“All Is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914” will be presented at these four community locations:
· DECEMBER 8 - Sycamore Creek Church - Potterville (105 N Church St, Potterville, MI 48876)
· DECEMBER 9 - Woldumar Nature Center (5739 Old Lansing Rd, Lansing, MI 48917)
· DECEMBER 10 - Allen Neighborhood Center (1611 E Kalamazoo St, Lansing, MI 48912)
·DECEMBER 11 - Carpenter Tree Farm (11243 Barnes Rd, Eaton Rapids, MI 48827) *(Note, this performance will be performed outdoors. Please dress accordingly).

All Is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914 will run December 8 – 11, 2021 beginning at 7:00 pm each night. The show is offered free of charge but RSVPs are required as seating is limited due to social distancing efforts. Tickets can be reserved at PCTC’s website, http://www.peppermintcreek.org. Play Date - tonight & 2 more

11/2/2021

Facilitator Doak Bloss reports on Facebook:

The "opening night" of PCTC's first "Play Date" was a great experience, highlighted by the actors who did two scenes from Dominique Morisseau's play "Pipeline." (I don't have their names in front of me, damn it, but they were powerful.) Rich discussion and a revealing look inside what turns a script into the theatre we love. (Great idea, Chad Badgero!)

Tonight it happens again at the downtown Lansing library, starting at 6:30. Come even if you haven't had a chance to read the play in advance; you will be moved to read it afterward, I guarantee.

Remaining Libraries Taking Part:
Nov 2 – 6:30 pm - CADL Downtown Lansing Library (401 S Capitol Ave, Lansing, MI 48933)
Nov 3 – 6:30 pm -  Eaton Rapids Area District Library (220 S Main St, Eaton Rapids, MI 48827)
Nov 4 - 6:30 pm - Fowlerville District Library (130 S Grand Ave, Fowlerville, MI 48836)
All free of charge and open to the public.
Play summary: A mother’s hopes for her son clash with an educational system rigged against him in PIPELINE, the riveting play by Dominique Morisseau. Nya, an inner-city public high school teacher, is committed to her students but desperate to give her only son Omari opportunities they’ll never have. When a controversial incident at his upstate private school threatens to get him expelled, Nya must confront his rage and her own choices as a parent. But will she be able to reach him before a world beyond her control pulls him away? With profound compassion and lyricism, PIPELINE brings an urgent conversation powerfully to the fore.
