Downeaster Theatre News

The Downeaster Theatre
Unfortunately, I was only able to see the final performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so… not much help from a “review” here — but I do want to report that the little old church on the north end of Pennsylvania has been sucessfully theatric-ized with a roomy stage replacing the small altar area.

This was one of their “youth” shows featuring kids 8-18. A group of 11 enthusiastic kids managed to play 22 roles with much running and fast costume changing. (Almost everyone doubled as an Oompa Loompa.) McKenna Stiles led the pack as the mysterious Willy Wonka. The challenging set pieces, boat, factory machines etc. were designed by Bill and Marisa Noise, with colorful costumes by Jess Burton — with help from a raft of volunteers and parents.

NOTE that Downeaster’s previously scheduled Nutcracker has been cancelled due to not enough auditioners. (I forgot to remove it from my emailed calendar, but that is corrected on the website All-Theatres Calendar http://www.greaterlansingtheatre.net)

BUT the other shows “must go on,” as they say, when MORE of you show up to auditions. Here’s another Youth show auditioning soon at Downeaster:

11/30-12/2 - 6:30 pm Thur/Fri & 10 am Sat - AUDITIONS (ages 8-18) for The Magic Flute, director: Kathryn Willis, 1120 N. Pennsylvania Ave - 48906. Audition workshop 530-630 on the Thursday night (Nov. 30) for $5 if any kids would like to know what to expect at their audition. And anyone who would like to read the script in advance can borrow it for a $10 deposit (in case of loss or damage). The kids will always have workshops the hour before the first night of auditions and the scripts are available for all but the last two shows of the season.
Downeaster’s January auditions include another Youth show as well as two Adult shows:
1/25-27 - 6:30 pm & 10 am Sat - AUDITIONS (ages 8-18) for The Princess and the Goblin; (ages 18+) for Betrayal and Rabbit Hole, director: Kathryn Willis - DT

For further Downeaster info, or to borrow scripts, or to offer your services for a small stipend on a per-show basis in any set/costume/sound/lights/props capacity, contact Kate at mailto:artisticdirector@thedowneastertheatre.com

Tori Shares Christmas December 3

12/3 Performers Use Gifts to Encourage Gifts for Foster Children - a fun full Sunday at The Avenue Cafe

On Sunday, December 3 from Noon to 8pm, twelve acts featuring over 40 participants, will entertain and laugh with audiences. All while raising money to buy presents for children in foster care.

As part of Tori Shares Christmas,  performers, musicians, poets and improv arts will converge on The Avenue Café, 2021 E. Michigan Ave. Lansing, MI, to raise their voices in music and laughter.

Games and crafts will also be available to encourage families to come out and play. Guests are invited to stop by throughout the day or stay and join us for the entire event. Admission is free, but a donation of $10 is suggested. For more information call 517.775.4246 or visit the facebook event page.

Second City alumnus and stand-up comedian Rico Bruce Wade will be doing improv games with kids from 5-6pm. After which the children will take the stage and demonstrate their improvisation skills.

The community is invited to join in the opening and closing acts and raise their voices in song. At noon everyone is encouraged to join in a collection of songs from the musical Annie, including: A Hard Knock Life, Tomorrow & Little Girls. At 7:45 pm Riverwalk Theatre’s cast of Rent will lead everyone in singing Seasons of Love.

“Tori Shares Christmas” was created by the family of Victoria “Tori” Croff as a tribute to the eight year old who drowned in 2011.  “When she passed, we focused on the loss,” observes Tori’s father Jeff Croff. “This event allows us to instead focus on laughter, silliness and giving; three things she embodied for us. The format also takes a page from the Little Drummer Boy as artists offer their talents as a way to entertain and in turn brings gifts to local children. ” Past events have purchased hundreds of gifts for children in foster care.

Climate Change Theatre at the Robin

CLIMATE CHANGE THEATRE ACTION – LANSING
What:    Hope Takes the Stage – Climate Change Theatre Action
When:     7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017
Where:     The Robin Theatre, 1105 S. Washington Ave., Lansing
Cost:    Free

Hope Takes the Stage - Climate Change Theatre Action is an evening of drama, humor, hope and information about climate change. It is part of Climate Change Theatre Action (CCTA), a biennial worldwide series of readings and performances of short climate change plays presented between Oct. 1 and Nov. 18, 2017 to coincide with United Nations Conference of the Parties 23 meeting. Founded in 2015, this year’s CCTA is focused on hope and opportunity within climate science with 50 playwrights from around the world contributing 1-5 minute plays.

The Lansing event will present three of these short plays: “The Blue Puzzle” by Clare Duffy (UK/Scotland) , “Dot to Dot to Dot” by Lynn Rosen (New York, NY), and “Homo Sapiens” by CCTA co-founder Chantal Bilodeau (United States). The evening will also feature Scott Crandall’s original performance art piece, “Visions for the End of the World,” information about the Science Debate organization, and an opportunity for the audience to contribute to a community creation.

Producer Melissa Kaplan learned about CCTA in August while researching the arts and climate change. Seeing the opportunity to share creative work and help build community around the subject, she contacted two Lansing Community College Theatre alumni to collaborate: Scott Crandall, Associate’s Theatre 2012, and Anna Szabo who completed the Theatre Studio Program in 2016. Having presented Crandall’s work at LCC as part of a January 2017 climate science series, Kaplan knew its highly original and poetic exploration would fit into the CCTA theme. Szabo, steadily active performing and directing locally while she finishes her Associate’s degree, will direct two “The Blue Puzzle” and “Dot to Dot to Dot” featuring actors Heath Sartorius, Kelley McNabb and Hannah Feuka. LCC Theatre alum Heath Sartorius will direct “Homo Sapiens” featuring Michael Boxleitner and Nick Lemmer.

An important component of CCTA 2017 is action and information. Sheril Kirshenbaum, executive director of Science Debate, will talk briefly about this organization and their current effort to have 2018 gubernatorial, senate and congressional candidates answer 10 questions related to the greatest science policy challenges facing America. Founded in 2008, Science Debate is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) that seeks to engage elected officials, the public and the media on science policy issues of vital importance to modern life.

Dylan Rogers, co-owner of The Robin Theatre, is hosting the event at The Robin, and helping develop the community creation.
Climate Change Theatre Action is a collaboration between the Center for Sustainable Practice in the Arts, No Passport Theatre Alliance, The Arctic Cycle, Theatre Without Borders, and York University.
