The Studio Presents “Reflections"

6/10 - How do we know where we've been and where we are going to? What makes us who we are? These existential questions are brought to the forefront in "Reflections", a collage concert for students of The Studio Performing Arts Center on June 10, 2017 at 7pm at the Hannah Community Center in East Lansing. Featuring dancers, singers and actors aged 3 1/2 to Senior Citizens, "Reflections" is a conglomeration of past and present, a reflection on where we've been and where we might be going, with a very hopeful look to the future. Featuring light comedy, very different dance styles along with very different music genres, ranging from classical to ragtime and rap, dancers, singers and actors present a variety of artistic pieces sure to entertain and enlighten! Tickets are $10 and can be purchased through https://reflectionscollage.eventbrite.com or 30 minutes prior to show in the theatre lobby.

MMFT presents Orphan Train

5/18-21 - Mid Michigan Family Theatre Presents
The Orphan Train

by Aurand Harris

The play tells the story of nine orphans on an "orphan train" that left New York City on May 28, 1914. The train travels to Midwestern towns in search of homes, any homes, anywhere for the orphaned and unwanted children. There's Mary, (Sydney Roche), Frank (who later becomes Frankie, a small girl) played by (Olivia Quiroga), Raymond, (Elijah Straley), Evie (Ella Hollandsworth), Lucky (Will White), spunky Pegeen played by (Annie White), Danny the song-and-dance boy (Claire Hilliker), Annie played by (Erin Gumfory) and Little Lucy, a quiet one played by (Adalynn Straley. And there are the men and women hoping for children (ably played by Mike Sobocinski, Naomi Turner, Tanya Roche, Carla Jones, and Linda Widener). The lonesome whistle wails as the train chugs between encounters of anxiety, laughter, wistfulness, rejection and acceptance. Eight stories unfold, each a memorable surprise. The Orphan Train is a charming heart-warmer and all we expect from one of legendary playwrights for children, Aurand Harris.

There are shows Thursday, May 18 – Sunday, May 21, 2017 with show times at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Thursday’s show is a fundraising effort with all proceeds from this event to go to support a mission trip to Mole St. Nicholas, Haiti as they work alongside Northwest Haiti Christian Mission in July, 2017.

5/26 - Waverly Middle School Students Perform New Musical by Local Playwrights

Middle school is an awkward time as kids try to find out who they are, how they fit into the world, and how they want others to see them.  But what if you’re an adolescent god?  It’s tough to be all-powerful when your voice is changing or the cute guy you have a crush on doesn’t know you exist.  Or worse, what if you’re only half-god?  How will you ever fit in?

That’s the premise behind “Mount Olympus Junior High,” this year’s Waverly Middle School musical. Directed by Waverly choir director Maureen Nauss, the play was written by Michigan State University theatre professor Rob Roznowski, with music and lyrics by Seth Burk, choir director at Holt Junior High.  Roznowski was inspired to write the play while on a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Patras in Greece.  He reached out to Burk to write the score, and the pair debuted the musical last June as part of MSU Summer Circle 2016 season, with Roznowski’s students.  Waverly Middle School’s production will mark only the second time the play has been performed.

"We are so excited to be producing a new show!  It's a great challenge: the actors are stretching their imaginations as they create so many fun characters! I can't wait to see how it all turns out!" said Nauss.

Mount Olympus Junior High follows a school year with new student Demi, whose dad is Zeus and whose mom is—gasp—a mortal. Classmates Apollo, Athena, Poseidon, and Aphrodite aren’t too keen about having their school “integrated,” so Demi tries to hide who she really is, until she can prove to her new friends that she belongs.  Along the way, all the Mount Olympus students navigate the trials and tribulations of middle school, interacting with a faculty and staff full of mythological beings.

The Waverly Middle School cast had the opportunity to meet Roznowski and Burk midway through rehearsals for the show. They learned how the pair worked together to create the musical and asked questions about character development, motivation, and how the playwrights decided what to include and why.  The students even performed one of the songs from the show with Burk at the piano.

"We're so thrilled to have Waverly Middle School produce our work. Meeting with the cast was such a great experience. They had such wonderful questions that were really insightful. I am so looking forward to seeing the final version,” said Roznowski, who hopes to bring some of the original MSU cast members to see Waverly’s production.

"The opportunity to have the author and composer give their input was really a once-in-a-lifetime moment for the students and for me.  We learned a lot about the process of creating a show . . . from inspiration to final curtain call,” said Nauss.

Mount Olympus Junior High will be performed Friday, May 26, 6:30 p.m. at the Waverly Middle School Little Theater, 620 Snow Rd., Lansing.  Tickets are $2 at the door.

EAST LANSING, MI – TAKE IT FROM THE TOP is a series of exciting, interactive workshops offered through MSU Federal Credit Union Institute for Arts & Creativity at Wharton Center. Participants – from pre-teens to young adults and beyond – receive a unique opportunity to train with a brilliant team of leading Broadway professionals. Former instructors include such talented Broadway performers as 2014 Tony Award® winner for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, Billy Porter, and Shoshana Bean, who played Elphaba in Wicked.

TAKE IT FROM THE TOP was developed by Tony Award® nominee and Legally Blonde star, Laura Bell Bundy, and Paul Canaan, assistant dance captain of 2014’s most Tony® nominated show, Kinky Boots. Canaan says, “We started TAKE IT FROM THE TOP as a catalyst for creativity in life. We bring a team of world-class artists at the top of the performing arts field to Michigan and immerse students in a full week of training in music, drama and dance – and advance their skills, no matter how accomplished, or inexperienced, they are. This is a truly unique educational experience, and culminates in a FREE performance at the end of the week! Each student will be given the opportunity to video an audition for a top New York casting agent who will offer feedback. It’s an incredible opportunity!”

Porter says, "I remember when I was a kid growing up, trying to figure out how to live as a creative person. I had lots of influences and teachers and people who helped me. Without those people, I wouldn't be where I am today. I'm so grateful when I get the opportunity to give back and share what I know with aspiring young artists."

Participants learn the craft of musical theatre - including basic to advanced skills, industry history and practical content - in an exciting, fast-moving, interactive setting. TAKE IT FROM THE TOP offers participants a chance to experience Broadway with the pros and sharpen skills in an inspirational, creative, fun and genuinely supportive environment. Participants will make friendships that will last a lifetime!
