OOPS, missed this, but one night left:

Okemos High School's virtual production of "High School Musical” opened last night and runs at 2pm and  7pm today. This is another product of Super Editor, Matt Ottinger.

The students, led by Chad Badgero, Claire Bellamy and Karyn Perry, overcame the challenges and limitations of working remotely through Zoom to create a fun, tight (1 hour!), entertaining take on the popular Disney show. Tickets are five dollars (plus a small handling fee), so help support the drama program and "bop" along to the music!

PEPPERMINT CREEK THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF VIRTUAL PRODUCTION “Radical Acts of Education”

PCTC releases final virtual event of the season featuring voices from the world of education during COVID

Lansing, MI – Peppermint Creek Theatre Company is proud to announce the fourth and final event in their 2020 -21 season, the release of the virtual documentary, Radical Acts of Education, a look at how COVID has impacted the world of education.

In a time when good talent is hard to come by it is important for the truth to be told about the state of education in Michigan and America, from those who are living it every day.  "Radical Acts of Education" aims to give those in the educational trenches a platform to speak their truth of their day-to-day lives by amplifying and empowering the voices of those who will either be walking advocates...or walking warning labels.

Peppermint Creek interviewed educators, students and parents and asked them what they had learned most during this unique year where COVID changed education like never before, and what they hoped to take with them into the future. At turns moving and heartbreaking, audiences are sure to be impacted and inspired by the candor and honesty of those featured in this new documentary.

“Peppermint Creek’s 2020-21 season not only challenges our audiences to engage in both timely and historical topics, but it also challenges US as a theatre company as we explore new ways to connect with audiences during a time when gathering together in a theatre building as we typical do isn’t permitted,” said Chad Swan-Badgero, Artistic Director of PCTC. “The issue of education is one of the most pressing issues our country is grappling with during the COVID 19 pandemic, and one that doesn’t have an easy or quick answer.”

"Radical Acts of Education", a 60-minute documentary, features educators from across the Midwest, local Lansing parents and administrators, and students from Dewitt High School.  The film was created and facilitated by PCTC Artistic Director Chad Swan-Badgero, Dewitt High School teacher Jeff Crowley, and lifelong educator and facilitator Jerry Jennings. The piece was edited by Ashley Garcia, a Dewitt High School student.

“As a former educator myself, and as someone who has worked his entire life championing education, I was both humbled and enraged at the stories told during this interview process,” said Swan-Badgero. “Education in America was already at a breaking point before the pandemic, so to see the ways the last year and a half have truly broken, but also inspired so many students, teachers and parents was eye-opening to say the very least.”

"Radical Acts of Education", will be available for free viewing on Peppermint Creek Theatre's YouTube channel beginning May 28, 2021 at 8 a.m.. For more information, audiences can visit Peppermint Creek Theatre’s website, www.peppermintcreek.org.

Working - WOW; get your tickets NOW

Due to my “insider status” (i.e. GLUT network access) I have been privileged to view a “sneak preview sample” of the first five minutes of Riverwalk Theatre’s upcoming musical, WORKING, directed by Kelly Stuible-Clark.

WOW — I’m amazed at the music quality, considering all had to record themselves separately — and the look and feel? Like a movie, thanks to dramatic, “choreographic" video editing by the dedicated and creative Matt Ottinger — with some pretty impressive “b-roll” that goes literally above and beyond the dancing boxes of singers/actors.

I have loved this musical since I first saw it at the Okemos Barn in the 80’s. This new version is updated with music from Stephen Schwartz, Lin-Manuel Miranda, James Taylor and others. Based on Stud Terkel’s book, the show celebrates various jobs and how they connect characters to their humanity and the world. Can’t wait to see it this Friday. I’ve already got my “virtual ticket”.

This is how it works. Go to http://Riverwalktheatre.com and click on the link that takes you to ShowTix4U, where you will enter your email and credit card info. You will receive an email with a link, which is your “ticket.” Just prior to show time, you click that link and voila: curtain up on an amazing video experience. Tickets $25 plus $3-something in fees — and well worth it, if this first clip is any indication. If you need help with this ticketing process, call Mike at the office 517-482-5700.

Just like a live, in-person show, YOU MUST WATCH AT YOUR SPECIFIC, PURCHASED SHOW TIME/DATE.
6 showings: May 21-22-23 & 28-29-30, 8pm Fridays & Saturdays; 2pm Sundays. Since there are royalties for this show (unlike A Doll’s House) it will not be re-broadcast later. DON’T MISS THIS SHOW. I’m hoping it is the best-and-last pandemic-video, paving the way for us all to get back together live, in-theatre!
