MSU Friends of Theatre Offer Gala Evening on May 10

The Friends of Theatre at Michigan State University will host a fundraising gala, "A Bite of Broadway,"  on Wednesday, May 10, to support the newly created "Friends of Theatre Endowment" for the university's Department of Theatre.

Guests will gather on the Cobb Great Hall stage of Wharton Center, converted for the evening into the streets of New York, to enjoy a strolling dinner of heavy hors d'oeuvres and wine. Entertainment will be provided by the newly created Musical Touring Company featuring a special guest from Broadway.

Tickets for the event are $100, $50 of which is  tax-deductible donation to the FOT Endowment Fund. Reservations can be made by calling (517) 355-6690 or online at theatre.msu.edu. Updates to the event will be posted on the Friends of Theatre at Michigan State University Facebook page.

The Friends of Theatre Endowment was created to provide funding for special projects benefitting students studying in the MSU Department of Theatre. Three projects are specIfically targeted: The ĭmáGen Musical Theatre Immersion Program with Wharton Center, Summer Circle Kids' Camp and the 4th Wall Theatre Company.  Other projects that may be funded through the endowment include student scholarships, artist/educator fellowships, guest artist and scholars and special production activities.

ĭmáGen is a unique educational collaboration between the Department of Theatre and Wharton Center that annually brings together MSU musical theatre and dance students, local high school students and Broadway performers and writers to the same stage for the production of a new musical.

Summer Circle Kids' Camp provides children from grades 1-6 a free day camp with instruction in acting, design, music and dance, culminating in a free public performance as part of the Summer Circle Theatre season.

In collaboration with the 4th Wall Theatre Company, MSU students work as artist/educators to help empower everyone from those with special needs to seniors, to break through the fourth wall, get on stage and shine. Through singing, dancing and acting the department's aspiring actors learn about the theatre, the world and themselves.

Gifts to the endowment can be made in a single payment, as a recurring sustaining  gift or as a pledge in installments. Those interested in contributing to the endowment may contact Bernie Campanella at bbcampy@msn.com.

Announcing the MSU Department of Theatre
Musical Theatre Touring Company

The Michigan State University Department of Theatre announces its new Musical Theatre Touring Company. The group will have their premiere at the Friends of Theatre "A Bite of Broadway" gala on Wednesday, May 10, at Wharton Center. (Tickets for the gala are $100, $50 of which is tax-deductible and available at theatre.msu.edu.)

The Musical Theatre Touring Company is under the direction of Brad Willcuts and Alisa Hauser with musical direction by Dave Wendelberger. It features students Anna Birmingham, Emma Callis, Jacob Covert, Sarah Davis, Katelyn Hodge, Lukas Jacob, Melanie Vandenberg and Max Sanders (with swing: Taylor Mcphail).

Joining the company in the premiere at "A Bite of Broadway" is Courtney Holbrook, a special guest artist from Broadway. Holbrook appeared in Kinky Boots on Broadway as Nicola and in Les Misérables. Wharton Center musical fans may remember her as Wednesday in The Addams Family as Wednesday and in Legally Blonde.

Brad Willcuts describes The Musical Theatre Touring Company as "a group of elite students from our musical theatre immersion program who auditioned for this new initiative this spring." He continues to explain that the group will take musical theatre performances on the road as an excellent example of experiential learning, benefitting the university at large, as this is part of a collaboration with Wharton Centre for the Performing Arts and the College of Arts and Letters' Department of Theatre.

Willcuts says taking part in the touring company will be of direct benefit to the participating MSU students. "The students will have more opportunities to hone their craft, present their work in a variety of performance venues work on material in a performance venue environment and continue to grow as artists."

To date, several local performances have been scheduled, including the premiere at the Friends of Theatre gala. Department chairperson Kirk Domer says that the group will be presenting their work regionally and available for performances with alumni organizations and related events across the country.

Willcuts says the group was created in a way that it can be shaped for various occasions. "We chose to create a musical theatre company because it can appeal to various organizations including those not necessarily familiar with theatre in general. Musicals can reach all sorts of people, groups and events," he says. "This touring company could feasibly perform for a very large range of events since the range of musical styles is equally as large."

In addition to the entertainment, the May 10 gala will include a strolling dinner of heavy hors d'oeuvres and wine. All proceeds will benefit the Friends of Theatre Endowment, designed to provide funding for special projects benefitting MSU theatre students, including: The ĭmáGen Musical Theatre Immersion Program with Wharton Center, Summer Circle Kids' Camp and the 4th Wall Theatre Company collaboration.  Other projects that may be funded through the endowment include student scholarships, artist/educator fellowships, guest artist and scholar residencies and special production activities.

Gifts to the endowment can be made in a single payment, as a recurring sustaining gift or as a pledge in installments. Those interested in contributing to the endowment may contact Bernie Campanella at bbcampy@msn.com.

Meet Me in St. Louis

4/21/2017

The Audio Air Force is presenting the network radio version of the musical "Meet Me in St Louis" this weekend at the Robin Theatre in REO Town. This is done live on stage as it would have been done on live radio back then. Audio theater is different than a stage in that all of the action goes on in your 'mind's eye'... which is called "theater of the mind". The actors, music and sound effects done live on stage "paint" a picture and tell a story.

The movie studios would sponsor radio versions of movies that were going to released, or re-released. The Audio Air Force will be using the original script from 1946, and will also include the songs that were featured in the radio broadcast. You'll see (hear) many actors that you will recognize from community theater in the area and other AAF shows - Mara McGill, Rachael Dec, Jim Coyer, Colleen Bethea, Chuck Krafft, Daedalian Lowry, Mark Chamberlin, Tom DeWitt, Dave Downing.

There will be two performances - Friday April 21 at 7pm and Saturday at 2pm.
Tickets are available online at Brownpapertickets.com, or at the door for $10.

Cheaper by the Dozen

4/21-23 - GENERATIONS COMMUNITY THEATER presents
CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN

Suppose you're an attractive high school girl and you're not only a member of a large and unique family but your father is, in fact, one of the great pioneers of industrial efficiency. Then suppose he decides, for no apparent reason, to apply his unorthodox methods to you and to the rest of your big family. The results are terribly embarrassing, funny and—it must be admitted—extremely effective!

But to Anne, (the eldest daughter), the chief effect seems to be that of making all of them seem ridiculous to everyone else at school—especially to potential boyfriends! While the situations are often uproarious, there's a serious reason Father is attempting to make his children toe the line.

“Cheaper by the Dozen” is a coming of age story that will make you laugh but also touch your hearts and bring back memories of your own childhood.

This production, presented by Generations Community Theater, is a fundraiser for St. Casimir Parish and will be preformed April 21, 22, at 7:00 PM and the 23rd at 2:00 PM on St. Casmir’s Family Life Center stage. Special appearance by Fr. Bill Lugger.

Tickets: Adults $10, Children $5, four and under free.  Advance tickets will be $9 and $4 and can be purchased at the Parish Office or after any of the weekend Masses.

Cinderella at Okemos H.S.

4/20-29 - OKEMOS THEATRE PRESENTS CINDERELLA

To the excitement of faculty and students alike, Okemos Theatre is preparing for its next musical feat: Cinderella.

However, this version of Cinderella is different from the Disney Princess movie we all know and love. Instead, this production will be a modernized adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein 1957 Broadway musical.

Isa Rodriguez (12) shared her excitement for being cast as Cinderella.
“Cinderella has been my favorite princess since I was five years old and getting this role was honestly a dream come true,” Rodriguez said. “There is a lot to live up to, but I’m excited for people in the community, little girls especially, to fall in love with the story and the characters just like I did when I was a little girl,” Rodriguez continued.

Director Chad Badgero picked this musical because it's the story everyone loves and knows with a modern touch. His vision for the show is to bring the magic from the musical to the audience.
“I love all the magic in this show and so I hope that it feels magical for the audience. That can happen in a variety of ways. There's an approach to how we view life that is also a little bit magical, like what the fairy godmother says about not wanting to be perfect and to go after our dreams, and I also think figuring out who we are can be magical too,” Badgero said.

Rehearsals for Cinderella started late February and have taken place every day after school.
The actors and actresses put in a lot of time to perfect the show before performing on stage. However, they are not the only ones slaving away to make this production come together.
Enter, stage crew.

Stage crew is responsible for setting, lighting and other technical aspects of the show.
A typical afternoon behind the scenes might look like hours of painting, rigging, set building and other miscellaneous tasks. Despite not being seen, these folks are the pulse of the production and the foundation of a successful show.

Unser Hashsham (11) has been an active member of stage crew since his freshman year. Hashsham said he feels his time is well spent behind the scenes.
“I feel the production is worth working for because, like any of the shows we’ve put on at the high school, it offers a unique perspective on how these types of things are done, and it also gives students a chance to learn skills that they can use later on, whether that be basic organization or something more specific, like being able to run a light board,” Hashsham said.

Cinderella has given the cast many opportunities for growth and improvement and the cast is very excited to perform it in front of their student body and community.

Cinderella will be performed Apr. 20 - 22 at 7:30pm, Apr. 23 at 3:00pm and Apr. 27 - 29 at 7:30pm. Buy your tickets before it's too late!  The link to prepurchase tickets is on okemostheatre.net.

Music Director Needed for Coraline

YOUNG ARTISAN WORKSHOP
Music Director needed for Summer 2017 workshop of CORALINE, the Musical

Auditions dates May 21 and 22 @ 6:30-8:30
Rehearsal begin May 29th and run Monday-Thursday 6:30-8:30.
Show dates are July 20-23

The play is 90 mins and consists of several short songs.  This is not the typical large musical number show.  In fact the orchestration is only for a piano.

The age range of the all children cast is 10-18 yrs old so I'm a looking for someone who knows how to work with kids and enjoys doing so.

Lastly, Young Artisan Workshop is a free special program funded by Riverwalk's amazing efforts to locate grants.  It is not funded in the same manner as regular main stage productions, therefore there is no compensation; instead you will receive the satisfaction of working with some pretty terrific kids.

If you are interested please call me at 517-316-6471.  I'd love to meet with you and talk more about the details of this production.

Warm Regards,
Sadonna Croff
