Ixion Correction and Call for Writers

6/30/2018

7/29 NOT 6/29!
A couple of you have noticed my typo on yesterday’s email. Ixion’s picnic and auditions are JULY 29, not June 29 which has already whizzed by….

IXION Potluck Picnic precedes SEASON AUDITIONS July 29
Ixion is holding our first ever potluck picnic to celebrate the community of patrons, performers, writers and technicians that have grown with Ixion. Just like every production, we think things work out best when we all bring a little something to the table. Ixion will provide the protein and sodas, if you'll just bring a dish to pass.
You'll get the chance meet other members of this growing community, while learning about our 2018-2019 season. Sneak a peek behind the scenes as we have sketches for upcoming shows and pieces from past productions. Readings from the three planned scripts and from members of Ixion's Wheel writing group will also be going on in the amphitheater next to the pavilion (or up close and personal in the pavilion if it rains) plus a few more surprises.

Please RSVP via https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2018-19-season-launch-potluck-picnic-tickets-46844208288

We will be holdingAUDITIONSimmediately following the picnic. For more information on auditions follow this link https://www.facebook.com/events/170669026972772/

We look forward to breaking bread with you; telling stories and building community.
Season auditions will be shortly after the potluck if you want to see the process from the beginning.

The one show that is NOT auditioning on JULY 29 is “Hope” a collection of short new scripts on that theme; up to eight winning scripts will be produced next May.

IXION is also Calling all WRITERS! Deadline September 30
Ixion is seeking short plays around the theme "Hope". Whether it's finding it, losing it or maintaining it, we want to see your stories. Whatever hope (or lack thereof) means to you, we look forward to any genre of its exploration.

We will select up to eight scripts for further development, including staged readings and possibly full production in May of 2019. The full production will be directed by Danica O'Neill

Guidelines for your Hope Submission(s) are:
- No more than 4 actors
-Simple or abstracted setting
-No more than 12 pages
-Submissions must include only first initial and last name of author. No bios are to be included.
-Multiple submissions are allowed
-Digital submissions only to ixionensemble@gmail.com
-Deadline is 5 p.m September 30, 2018.

6/27 - Friends of the Opera House and the Lansing Concert Band present “Jazz for a Cause”

The Grand Ledge Opera House will be swinging with the sounds of the jazz era as the Lansing Concert Band Big Band takes the stage for “Jazz for a Cause”, Wednesday, June 27 at 7:00 p.m.

The program will consist of jazz standards from the ‘Great American Songbook’ made popular by the likes of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and many more.

Proceeds from the event will benefit both the Opera House and SIREN Eaton Shelter, serving survivors of domestic violence and homeless families in Eaton County. (Learn more at sireneatonshelter.org).

The LCB ‘Big Band’ was formed in 1993 by members of the Lansing Concert Band who wanted an opportunity to play the great jazz standards and bring this exciting art form to mid-Michigan audiences. The ensemble has performed numerous concerts and fundraising events, as well as dinner dances for WKAR TV and radio volunteers.

Jim Kasprzak, lead trumpet, directs the dynamic 18-piece group comprised of traditional jazz-era instrumentation: full sections of saxophones, trombones and trumpets, plus a swingin’ rhythm section. The ensemble also features two local vocalists: Dan Templin and Kelly Sandula-Gruner, who are also members of Singers on the Grand, based in Grand Ledge.

If you love jazz, swing and blues music, don’t miss this unique opportunity. Tickets are just $10 and the price includes dessert and coffee. Contact the Opera House for tickets at 517-627-1443; office hours 9:00a – 5:00p Monday–Friday. Tickets will also be available at MacDowell’s Floral and Fireplace and Ace Hardware (Grand Ledge) and Eaton Area Senior Center (Charlotte). You may also buy at the door.

EAST LANSING, MI – Registration is now taking place for TAKE IT FROM THE TOP is a series of exciting, interactive workshops offered through Wharton Center Institute for Arts & Creativity. Participants – from pre-teens to young adults and beyond – receive a unique opportunity to train with a brilliant team of leading Broadway professionals. Former instructors include such talented Broadway performers as 2014 Tony Award® winner for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, Billy Porter, and Shoshana Bean, who played Elphaba in Wicked. This year’s guest artist are Paul Canaan, Carlos Encinos, Parker Esse, Sean McKnight, Carolyn Ockert, Brad Willcuts and Jacob Yandura.

TAKE IT FROM THE TOP was developed by Tony Award® nominee and Legally Blonde star, Laura Bell Bundy, and Paul Canaan, assistant dance captain of 2014’s most Tony® nominated show, Kinky Boots. Canaan says, “We started TAKE IT FROM THE TOP as a catalyst for creativity in life. We bring a team of world-class artists at the top of the performing arts field to Michigan and immerse students in a full week of training in music, drama and dance – and advance their skills, no matter how accomplished, or inexperienced, they are. This is a truly unique educational experience, and culminates in a FREE performance at the end of the week!”

Porter says, "I remember when I was a kid growing up, trying to figure out how to live as a creative person. I had lots of influences and teachers and people who helped me. Without those people, I wouldn't be where I am today. I'm so grateful when I get the opportunity to give back and share what I know with aspiring young artists."
