2/3-12 - Blood at the Root by Dominique Morisseau at MSU’s Arena

1/31/2017

Michigan State University welcomes guest artist Steve H. Broadnax III from Penn State University as the director of Blood at the Root, opening this Friday, Feb 3 and running through Sunday, February 12. All performances will be held in the Arena Theatre at the MSU Auditorium building, ticket information can be found below.

Broadnax, a seasoned director, writer, choreographer and actor, has worked around the world in such theatres as Apollo Theatre NYC, Detroit Public Theatre, Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, Arkansas Repertory Theatre and many, many more. He spoke with playwright Dominique Morisseau about Blood at the Root, who describes the play as:

…social prejudice versus systemic injustice. We all have prejudices against each other, whether they’re big or small. Sometimes they’re racial, sometimes they’re with gender, sometimes they’re with ideas and beliefs. But it’s the difference between having those prejudices against each other, learning to live with each other and enlightening ourselves, and a system using prejudice to completely marginalize a people. The system is supposed to be blind, justice is supposed to be blind and yet it isn’t. So, I think those things are all coming up against each other in this play.

The cast features prominent MFA Acting candidates Karen Vance, Greg Hunter and Kristy Allen; as well as very strong BFA Acting students Gary Patterson, Jacob Covert and Jen English. This production showcases costume design by Angel Snyder, scenic design by Mike Merluzzi, and lighting design by Peter Verhaeghe. Sound by Chelle Peterson is filled with movement and choreography moments with the help of Brad Willcuts and Shayla Woodward.

Directed by Steve H. Broadnax III (Guest Artist from Penn State University)

Hate Mail

1/27/2017

2/17-19 & 24-25 - 7 pm - Coming up February 17th & 18th and 24th & 25th Generations Community Theatre’s production of Hate Mail by Bill Corbett and Kira Obolensky at Urban Beat in Old Town Lansing, 1213 Turner St, Lansing, MI 48906

Directed by Nicole Clyne and Janet Colson

Cast: Michael Boxleitner and Hannah Feuka

Hate Mail is a comedy that takes place in the early 80’s. It’s the story of Preston and Dahlia, two people who are thrown together through a series of mishaps, bizarre circumstances, and spiteful turns of the pen. While inspired by A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters,” Hate Mail takes us down its own path of unrequited love and romance gone awry.

Bargain Thursdays at Riverwalk

1/27/2017

OOPS - we left out the all important BARGAIN THURSDAYS in the press release for Superior Donuts, the provocative comedy opening at Riverwalk in a couple weeks. Feb 16-26

As with all non-musicals at Riverwalk, THURSDAY shows start at 7pm (rather than the usual 8) and are a BARGAIN at ONLY $10 or $8 for seniors/students/military.

(This show ALSO features the philanthropic NON-bargain Wednesday, Feb. 15, 6:30 fundraiser for Kristine Thatcher, $25, and a good cause!)
http://www.riverwalktheatre.com

I am extra excited about Superior Donuts, because it embodies the diversity and inclusion all the theatre leaders and supporters were all talking about at the Ghostlight Project event last Thursday at Peppermint Creek. Director Amy Rickett says, "This is a play about hope and friendship. Breaking down the bias that comes from our own environments and challenging ourselves to be better people.” http://www.theghostlightproject.com

Arthur Przybyszewski (James Houska) owns a decrepit donut shop in the uptown neighborhood of Chicago. LCC Black Box Theatre
168 Gannon Building
411 N. Grand Avenue, Lansing 48933

LCC Theatre alum Scott Crandall performs his original experimental piece. Through poetry, image-centric stage work, and movement, the performance explores our historical and present relationships to Armageddon through a language of visions and prophecy. Visions is framed as a pageant of a shipwrecked prophet's series of apocalyptic visions that is presented in an initial meeting of a doomsday club." Approximately 35 minutes, it travels from energetic dance routines to desperate prayer to sea shanties to religious ecstasy. Visions was developed through an 18 month process of research, physical improvisation, writing, and sound composition.
Visions is part of CLIMATE CHANGE: FILM, FACT & FANTASY, LCC's series Jan. 23-28 offering daily events exploring climate change through in-depth evidence, films, and theatrical performance. Series details on the attached flyer and www.lcc.edu/thecentre

Featuring a cast of everybody’s favorite PAW Patrol characters and presented by VStar Entertainment Group and Nickelodeon, PAW Patrol Live! shows that “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” and shares lessons for all ages about citizenship, social skills and problem-solving as the characters each use their unique skills and teamwork. The show includes two acts and an intermission, and engages audiences with Bunraku puppetry, an innovative costuming approach that brings the PAW Patrol characters to life on stage with their vehicles and packs.

“Using Bunraku, puppetry elements are built into costumes worn by real actors to create a wonderful combination of life-size pups and to make a stronger connection with the audience. The PAW Patrol cast sings and dances, which brings a fun, realistic parallel between the animated series and the live show,” says Jim Waters, producer, VStar Entertainment Group.

The performance features up-tempo music and a brand new cleverly written script that is a good introduction to live theater for kids. Classic theatrical scenery along with a high-tech video wall visually transports families to an authentic PAW Patrol environment, including locations from the TV series, like Adventure Bay, The Lookout, Seal Island, Farmer Yumi's farm and Jake's Mountain. Special interactive video allows the audience to participate via interviews, solve clues with the Pups, follow Mayor Goodway and much more.
