EAST LANSING – The MSU Department of Theatre is proud to present the comedy-drama by Ferber and Kaufman, Stage Door. All performances will be held in the Pasant Theatre at Wharton Center opening Friday, November 13, 2015.
One of the largest scaled productions the department has generated this year, Stage Door, will take over the Pasant Theatre with its beautifully sprawling scenic design by Elspeth Williams, 3rd Year MFA Design. The talented cast of Stage Door tallies a hearty thirty-two in total, with the majority of those roles filled by women. The action surrounds the residents of the Footlights Club, a rooming-house for actresses. Join these women as they laugh and cry together on their journey through Depression-Era New York.
Once again, director Rob Roznowski has connected multiple units across campus in this highly-collaborative artistic effort of Stage Door. Major contributors include Lisa Fine of The Center for Gender in Global Context (GenCen), Peter Glendinning of Art, Art History and Design, and Henry Brimmer of Advertising. Fine spoke to the cast as part of their research about women’s professional opportunities in the 1930s. Glendinning, Prof. of Photography, worked with the women of the cast to recreate glamour shots of actresses of the time. And finally, Brimmer’s advertising students created mock Broadway and Holloywood posters of the 1930s using the very photographs taken by Glendinning. These partnerships, as well as the effort of the cast in researching real actresses of the time like Jean Harlow and Lucille Ball, creates a production rich with life, freedom of play and genuine relationships on stage.
Performances held in the Pasant Theatre at Wharton Center.
