Lansing, Michigan, November 2013—The Waverly Theatre Club will present its fall play, William Shakespeare’s comedy, “Much Ado about Nothing,” November 14, 15, and 16, at 7 p.m. in the Waverly High School auditorium.
The cast of 20 features Dominic Redman and Emily Stokes as Benedick and Beatrice, and Malcolm Davis and Brijae Longdo as Claudio and Hero, two couples whose romantic entanglements are the subject of the play’s actions. Intrigue, gossip, mistaken identities, and revenge all come into force as friends and enemies try to bring the couples together or break them apart.
Most of the cast members for the play are underclassmen; however, most are experienced actors, having received their start performing in Waverly Middle School shows.
“With this play, we are really seeing the results of starting a ‘feeder system’ for the theatre program about four years ago,” said Richard Redman, director. “It’s exciting to see the level of hard work and talent we have on stage.”
In addition, many of the cast members prepared for their Shakespearean roles through the Waverly Theatre Club’s summer program, which included field trips to both the Michigan Shakespeare Festival and Waterworks Shakespeare, exposing the students to four of Shakespeare’s plays, including “Much Ado about Nothing.” Also, just before tech week, the two leads—Dominic Redman and Emily Stokes—participated in a week-long Shakespeare Immersion experience with Stratford artists at the Wharton Center.
Student talents are also being showcased through an original musical composition written for the play by cast members John Henrikson and Michael Cooper.
