A World Premiere Devised Performance
The MSU Department of Theatre is excited to introduce it’s incoming class of theatre students in the 9th Annual Freshman Showcase: The Monkey King. This unique devised piece, directed by Deric McNish will make its world premiere in the Arena Theatre of the MSU Auditorium from December 3-6, 2015.
This play is the Department of Theatre’s contribution to MSU’s themed “Year of China,” an exploration of arts and culture meant to deepen cultural awareness, enrich the student experience, engage the community, and enhance global inclusiveness. Based on China’s most well-known pieces of classic literature, Journey to the West, this devised piece was a total collaborative effort between students, faculty and graduate mentors, and even members of the Peking Opera Company.
Students in the production worked closely with Master Qi Shu Fang’s Peking Opera Company during an intense workshop including makeup, style, and stage combat; as well as the staging of some of the scenes in the show! This devised Freshman Showcase is truly a global product and an incredible example of cross-cultural learning and collaboration.
