Sometimes the best stories are the true ones. They’re Playing Our Song is just that: a musical comedy set in the 1970s about the trials and tribulations of love between a neurotic composer and an offbeat lyricist. Vernon and Sonia struggle to overcome their pasts and make the present work, each with the help of three alter egos who challenge and cajole them along.
“They’re Playing Our Song was playwright Neil Simon’s idea,” said LCC director Connie Curran-Oesterle. “Simon saw the rocky relationship of Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager and thought ‘What a great plot for a musical! And who better to write it than the composer and lyricist themselves.’ So, Simon, Hamlisch and Sager worked to create this romantic play with music that opened on Broadway in 1979 and ran for 1089 successful performances.”
Hamlisch and Sager wrote numerous songs together. Hamlisch, who died in 2012, was one of only 12 people to win Oscar, Tony, Emmy and Grammy awards, and also won Pulitzer and Golden Globe awards among many others. Sager, still writing today, has won Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe awards.
LCC’s cast of students features Nathan Dome as Vernon and Sally Hecksel as Sonia. The alter egos of Vernon are played by Jacob Crosby, Zach Riley and Ian Whipp. Sonia’s alter egos are played by Chelsea-Ann Bonofiglio, Tresa Brake and Monica Tanner.
