Dark Comedy by Martin McDonagh
Directed by John Roche
This hilariously horrifying dark-comedy centers on Maureen Folan (Abby Murphy), a beaten-down, fortiesh spinster living in literal and figurative discomfort, with Mag (Janet Lockwood), her passive-aggressive, harridan of a mother in County Galway, Ireland in 1989. Emotional and physical one-upmanship ensues when their lives are touched by two brothers, Pato (Blake Bowen) and Ray (Joseph Mull) Dooley, who live up the road. Can Maureen’s life-sentence of miserable drudgery be commuted, allowing her a path to love and fulfillment? Can Bleak House become Great Expectations?
Note, a few weeks into rehearsals, two of this four-person cast had to drop out for personal reasons and Jan Lockwood and Joe Mull have stepped in. They deserve extra credit for jumping onto this challenging show when the train was already rolling! I'm a little embarrassed that our Ripples newsletter, sent out March 29, has the cast wrong —but all reports indicate that the new cast is equally powerful. Don't miss this show!
