Lansing, MI – Peppermint Creek Theatre Company, with license from Musical Theatre International, is proud to announce the two week run of “Next To Normal,” a rock musical about a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effect that her illness has on her family. The musical also addresses such issues as grieving a loss, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry, and suburban life. The show was written by Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey.
Next to Normal debuted off-Broadway in 2008, winning the Outer Critics' Circle Award for Outstanding Score and the musical opened on Broadway in April 2009. It was nominated for eleven 2009 Tony Awards and won three, Best Original Score, Best Orchestration andBest Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley. It also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming just the eighth musical in history to receive the honor. The previous musical to win the Pulitzer was Rent, in 1996, which was also directed by Michael Greif. In awarding the prize to Kitt and Yorkey, the Pulitzer Board called the show "a powerful rock musical that grapples with mental illness in a suburban family and expands the scope of subject matter for musicals.
Peppermint Creek Artistic Director, Chad Badgero, had this to say about why he was drawn to the show, “The issues of mental health and the ways in which we treat individuals with disorders is a major cause for concern and discussion in our society today. “Next To Normal”speaks to these issues, as well as the ways in which we do, or don’t, talk about mental health in a very honest and forthright way. I know audiences are going to be moved and enthralled with this tremendous story, and we’re thrilled to be presenting the Mid-Michigan premiere”!
Variety Magazine raved, “'Next to Normal’ shouldn’t fail to absorb anyone interested in what’s happening in American musical theatre and, not incidentally, in American families", and the New York Times called the show “a work of muscular grace and power. It is much more than a feel-good musical; it is a feel-everythingmusical.”
