Bill Gordon Mid Michigan Family Theatre at 2/42 Community Building 2630 Bennett Road Okemos, MI 48864 (517) 339-2145 Business The East Lansing Dance and Theater Company, the performing division of The Studio Performing Arts Center in East Lansing, will take to the stage once again with a witty and original version of Through The Looking Glass, a story for all ages on January 27 at 7:30pm and January 28 at 2pm at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center Albert White Theatre.
Through The Looking Glass follows a shy, teenage Alice (Emily McWethy) as she attempts to retrieve her kittens (Yagmur Ulsoy and Briella Fase), who mysteriously disappear into a living room mirror. What follows is a magical adventure in a strange World of Living Flowers, caught between two silly, self-consumed sisters (Kaleel Van Voorhees and Mikaela McWethy) and accompanied by the Crow (Marissa Beatty) and the Jabberwock (Katherine Knox). Many adventures later, which include bearing witness to the Walrus and Carpenter’s dining feud (Simon Rebeck and Elsa Rusthoven), encounters with two grumpy little twin men (Christen Chappelle and Annie McIlhagga), being caught as a pawn in a life-size chess game, and the Red and White Knights dueling on hobby horses with no balancing skills, Alice learnes to trust herself and oversome her fear (the Jabberwock) and doubt (the Crow) to be able to advance to the status of a Queen herself, completely in charge of her destiny. Directed by the The Studio PAC Artistic Director, Patrice Van Voorhees, the show features a cast of 18 young dancers exhibiting a variety of extraordinary athletic and physical theatrical skills. It is a story delight for all ages! Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at ThroughTheGlass@eventbrite.com For more information, please contact Patrice Van Voorhees at The Studio Performing Arts Center 517-203-8324 patrice@dancesingact.com Tony n' Tina are looking for your RSVP!

Through poetry, image-centric stage work, and movement, the performance explores our historical and present relationships to Armageddon through a language of visions and prophecy. Visions is framed as a pageant of a shipwrecked prophet's series of apocalyptic visions that is presented in an initial meeting of a doomsday club." Approximately 35 minutes, it travels from energetic dance routines to desperate prayer to sea shanties to religious ecstasy. Visions was developed through an 18 month process of research, physical improvisation, writing, and sound composition. Visions is part of CLIMATE CHANGE: FILM, FACT & FANTASY, LCC's series Jan. 23-28 offering daily events exploring climate change through in-depth evidence, films, and theatrical performance. <http://www.lcc.edu/thecentre> Suggested donations $5/$10 LCC Performing Arts Production Office, 517-483-1488 www.lcc.edu/showinfo<http://www.lcc.edu/showinfo> Use your acting and improvisational skills, have fun, help students and get paid at the same time!

By Christy Hall Directed by Frannie Shepherd-Bates January 26 - February 26, 2017 A World Premiere! How deep do the bonds of sisterhood go? A Painted Window catalogues the reunion of two sisters, Josephine and Sylvia, who used to giggle together late at night, yet now stand worlds apart. Forced to move in together after decades of estrangement, the two women struggle to reconcile their past, navigate the present and plan their future. A Painted Window is a play about family and love, but it’s also a keen dissection of identity, classism, racism, and the havoc that consumerism, greed, and entitlement have wreaked on the American Dream. Featuring Ruth Crawford (Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol, Old Love), Dominique Lowell (Outside Mullingar), and Lynch Travis (WT Debut!). Williamston Theatre 122 S. Putnam Street Williamston, MI 48895 (517) 655-7469 http://www.williamstontheatre.org 1/20 - Williamston Special Event! A Staged Reading of THE TAMING By Lauren Gunderson

Join us for an evening of insight, laughs and optimism as we celebrate Inauguration Day. Call to reserve seats: 517-655-7469. Admission is free, but donations to the Williamston Theatre will be graciously accepted at the door. Williamston Theatre 122 S. Putnam Street Williamston, MI 48895 (517) 655-7469 http://www.williamstontheatre.org On January 19, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. in each time zone across the country, members of the theater community from Broadway to regional theaters to high schools and colleges and community theaters will come together to launch The Ghostlight Project . Gathering at theaters on the eve of the Presidential Inauguration, people will join in a collective, simultaneous action, together creating “light” for challenging times ahead. Inspired by the tradition of leaving a "ghost light" on in a darkened theater, artists and communities will make or renew a pledge to stand for and protect the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion for everyone regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, gender identity, or sexual orientation. The entire Lansing theatre community is gathering on January 19 to be part of this national event.
The Ghostlight Project aims to create brave spaces that will serve as lights in the coming years and to activate a network of people across the country working to support vulnerable communities. These gatherings are a pledge for continued vigilance and increased advocacy. The Ghostlight Project is inspired by the Sanctuary Movement, which has its roots in the safe haven provided by faith based communities, and which today advocates for and offers physical sanctuary to immigrants facing deportation through such models as Sanctuary Cities and Sanctuaries Campuses. The Ghostlight Project defines “sanctuary” as a space where: • It is safe to be who you are, regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, gender identity, or sexual orientation. • Diverse opinions, dissent, and argument are not only tolerated, but invited. • Active listening and courageous exchange are fundamental values. • Collective action, activism, and community engagement, both within and outside the walls of the theater, are cultivated, encouraged, and supported. The event on January 19th marks the initiation for some artists and theaters, and marks another step for others with a long history of fighting for social justice and equity. As the participants all have varied backgrounds, so too is it up to each institution and individual to determine what ongoing action will best serve their institution and community. Nine theatres in the Lansing community will all come together on January 19 at 5:30pm at the Miller Performing Arts Center (6025 Curry Lane, Lansing, MI 48911) for a program led by Debbie Mikula of the Arts Council of Greater Lansing and facilitators to discuss and celebrate the current theatre scene in our community and what projects, ideas, and dreams they would like to see take place or established moving forward, with an eye toward social justice, inclusion, and diversity. Present at the event will be representatives from Ixion Theatre, Lansing Community College Theatre Department, Michigan State Department of Theatre, Over the Ledge Theatre, Owosso Community Theatre, Peppermint Creek Theatre Company, Riverwalk Theatre, Starlight Dinner Theatre, and Williamston Theatre. The event will also include music, excerpts from historical speeches, and a “community lighting”. All are welcome at this FREE public event. The Ghostlight Project will be a resource for theaters, arts communities, and individuals to identify and create meaningful action steps, or to continue in the social justice work already underway. More information about The Ghostlight Project can be found on their website,https://theghostlightproject.com/. |
