Peppermint Creek Theatre produces the Midwest premiere of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist
Lansing, MI – Peppermint Creek Theatre Company is proud to announce the two-week run of the brutally funny new play, Gloria, by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, which was a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize.
Gloria is a funny, trenchant, and powerful play that follows an ambitious group of editorial assistants at a notorious Manhattan magazine, each of whom hopes for a starry life of letters and a book deal before they turn thirty. But when an ordinary humdrum workday becomes anything but, the stakes for who will get to tell their own story become higher than ever.
A finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize, the New York Times called Gloria "[A] whip-smart satire of fear and loathing…GLORIA is to the New York publishing business what David Mamet’s Speed-the-Plow is to the Hollywood film industry.” And the New York Post raved, “All you need to know is that the bitingly funny and fierce GLORIA is one of [2016’s] best shows. What playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins says about American society, the media and how we package celebrity and tragedy is as spot-on as it is depressing.” Gloria is a rare example of a contemporary play that keeps audiences constantly guessing where it’s headed and is not to be easily forgotten.
Peppermint Creek Guest Director, Ben Cassidy, speaks about what drew him to this new play, “Before I could even figure out what Gloria was about, the sharp dialogue hooked me. I had never read a script so modern, relevant, and FUNNY! When you finally realize what’s happening, the show takes an intense turn and pushes these already aggressive characters to another level.”
Cassidy continued, “With a script plush with topical conversations like the clashing of generations, race insensitivity, and how tragedy is presented in media – there is no doubt audiences will leave Gloria wanting to talk more about it.”
The production will take place at Peppermint Creek’s performance venue at Central United Methodist Church, 215 N. Capitol Ave, Lansing MI 48933. The show will run Thursday, January 16 - Sunday, January 19, and Thursday, January 23 – Sunday, January 26, 2020.
