“YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU’ COMES TO STARLIGHT THEATRE

4/12/2016

‘You Can't Take It With You’ is a whimsical Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway play that was transformed into an Academy Award winning film, and now it comes to Lansing’s Starlight Dinner Theatre (April 22 – May 1). This is the story of the zany and carefree Sycamore household, presided over by Grandpa Vanderhof (Ed Baker), other household characters include:  Penny Sycamore (Linda Granger), Grandpa's daughter and husband Paul (Jim Thorp), who makes firecrackers in his basement with the help of permanent houseguest Mr. DePinna (Tracey Dolinar); their daughter, Essie (Angela Dill), who imagines that she's a ballerina and her teacher, Kolenkhov (Leo Poroshin), and Essie's husband, Ed (Greg Pratt), who'd rather play a xylophone than work.  The one normal member of the household is Alice Sycamore (Rachel Mender), who is in love with wealthy Tony Kirby (Jeff Kennedy).

Naturally, when Tony’s stuffy and aristocratic parents (Dan Templin and Charlotte Ruppert) come to the Sycamores' for dinner, the event is a disaster, capped with the arrest of everyone in the household.  This production is highlighted with one madcap scene after another.  But in the end, after some careful self-examination and soul searching, everyone comes to the conclusion that you, indeed, ‘Can’t Take It With You’.

This iconic stage play is directed by Diana Lett.  The cast also includes: Susan DeRosa, Gail Dean, Dale Williams, Diane Kennedy, Steve Lett, Mike Ross and Gary Mitchell.

Dates:  April 22-23 and 29-30, and May 1, 2016.
Times: Fridays and Saturdays (dinner at 6:30 and show at 7:30), Sundays (dessert at 1:30 p.m. and show at 2 p.m).
Ticket Prices: $36 regular price, $33 for seniors/students, $15/$14 show only
Location: Waverly East Intermediate School 3131 W. Michigan Ave, Lansing, MI 48917

12/5 - NUNCRACKERS ENCORE!

12/2/2015

Starlight Dinner Theatre’s rollicking NUNCRACKERS is taking the show on the road to do one more performance at Homegrown Productions in St. Johns on Saturday, December 5 at 7:30 pm. Susan DeRosa (Nuncrackers Producer at Starlight) has taken over as director of this encore production. She and Beth Webb (Reverend Mother) are leaders of Homegrown Productions in St.Johns, and saw this as a great holiday opportunity to raise funds for their elderly building. The kids, and “stage manager” actors were not available for this extra show, but Beth and Susan are now training replacements! Laura Croff, Rick and Leann Dethlefsen and Diana Lett will reprise their stellar roles, along with Beth - and James Geer at the keyboard.
Nuncrackers will perform at the Wilson Center, 101 W. Cass Street, St. Johns.  It is directly behind (south of) the Clinton County Courthouse in an old school building. You can park in the Courthouse lot after 6 pm. There is also on-street parking on Cass and adjacent streets.  Please use either the main entrance or the one on the Auditorium (right ) end of the building.

If any of your family or friends missed the Starlight performances, please let them know about this show.  Tickets are $25 because it is a fund raiser for auditorium renovations. They are raising funds for new lighting and controls for the Wilson Center.

Nuncrackers needs Leopards

I’m (Jane) directing Nuncrackers for Starlight Dinner Theatre (first two weekends in November) and we need 4 stuffed leopards, at least 12" long (so the back row can make out what they are) for one of the many silly jokes in this show. Does anyone have one to loan us? If not, please keep your eye out at second hand stores if you shop at them. Thanks!  Contact Producer Linda Granger if you have a leopard to loan. <starlightdinnertheatre@yahoo.com>

STARLIGHT DINNER THEATRE BRINGS ‘CAMELOT’ TO LANSING

4/25/2015

5/8-17 - Camelot brings the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table to life with an extraordinary score and a story that poignantly dramatizes the human conflict at the heart of this classic tale. Camelot tells the story of Arthur (Martin Underhill), a young squire who becomes King after extracting the sword Excalibur from its legendary rock. The musical follows Arthur from a young, ambitious, idealistic King who dreams of creating a just society to the despairing king bearing witness to his dream’s demise. Arthur’s dream is inspired by his vivacious Queen Guenevere (Paula Sheynerman).  But when Guenevere falls in love with Arthur’s most celebrated, beloved, and loyal knight, Lancelot (Joe Baumann), they begin a romance as doomed as it is passionate.  This great Lerner and Lowe score includes such hits as “If Ever I Would Leave You”, “How To Handle A Woman”, and the title song “Camelot”.

Award winning director Linda Granger has assembled a cast of both veterans and new comers to the stage, totaling more than 20 performers.  Ed Baker, Dan Pappas, Josh Martin, Charlotte Ruppert, and Abbie Matthews round out the lead roles.

Dates:  May 8-9, 15-17, 2015
Times: Friday-Saturday dinner at 6:30 p.m., show at 7:30 p.m.
Sunday Dessert Matinee at 1:30 p.m., and show at 2 p.m.
Ticket Prices: $39 show & dinner, $36 for seniors & students.  $18-17 show only. May 17 performance is $25 for show and dessert.
Location: Waverly East Intermediate School, 3131 W. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI 48917

Camelot Birthday for Set Veteran, Bill Woodland, May 16

Camelot Birthday for Set Veteran, Bill Woodland, May 16 - all who worked with Bill encouraged to attend.

Judie Woodland, Bill Woodland's wife, is throwing Bill an 80th Birthday Party/Celebration of his many decades as a Set Designer and Builder for local community theaters.  The celebration will be held at Starlight Dinner Theatre's performance of "Camelot" on Saturday, May 16th.  Bill is retiring from set building and "Camelot" will be his last set.  Every year at the last show of the season, Founder and Artistic Director, Linda Granger, recognizes the Starlight staff by having them come on stage and taking a bow.  It would be great to have the audience filled with people who have worked with Bill and/or performed on one of his sets.

The Garage Sale at STL

3/11/2015

3/13-20 - And the REST of your weekend, you should be figuring out when to attend The Garage Sale, my bittersweet look at love and loss, seen through the eyes of two toys who meet for the first time when they are put up for sale at a two-family garage sale.

This is a Starlight UNdinner Theatre show — or “Starlight Lite” as Linda is calling it. Only $20 includes a dessert buffet and beverages - AND a real “garage sale” fundraiser before and after this one-hour show. There will also be an author/cast/director “talk back” after each show (except Saturday the 14th because I’ll be at the Riverwalk party!)

As you may know, I also design the program for Starlight, and it warmed my heart to read the comments in the actors’ bios and the director’s note:

“Thanks to Jane for trusting me and Starlight with her beloved play. It is very dear to my heart for many reasons, and I am so excited to be on the other side of the footlights directing it 19 years after playing Rag Baby! Chris and Angie could not be more perfect as Teddy and Rag Baby. An absolute joy to work with, they bring great ideas, energy and depth to their roles... It is a beautiful allegory about loving, taking risks and living life to the fullest, versus succumbing to your fears, living in isolation and avoiding love and life’s adventures.” - Linda Granger
“Any show where I can work with Angie is a treat. She’s exceptional on the stage, professional in her preparation and puts you at ease during the performance. Thanks to Jane Zussman for the delightful script, Linda for trusting me with Teddy, and for her friendship….I hope everyone will enjoy the show and take away from it all of the wisdom that is so evident.”  - Chris Klaver

"At the very first reading, I became quite enamored with this beautiful little tale that Jane Zussman has created. I laughed, I cried and as a grown-up that’s not ashamed to admit she still talks to her dolls, I fell in love with these two characters. What an honor it is to work within the parameters of all this local creativity! May your hearts always hold tight to their childlike wonder no matter how battered and torn they may be.” - Angela Dill

THE GARAGE SALE - one weekend plus the following Friday, March 13-14-15 & 20 $20 including Dessert 6:30, Show 7:30 (It’s only an hour long, so you can get out before the basketball game. ;-}Sunday Dessert  1 pm; Show 2 pm.
($15 for “show only” with no food; you can get show-only tickets at the door.Waverly East  Intermediate School, 3131 West Michigan, between Waverly and Rosemary; park and enter on the east side of the building)RESERVATIONS : 517-243-6040  •  www.starlightdinnertheatre.com

Garage Sale adds a show

3/7/2015

Time for my “blitz” of promos on The Garage Sale - the script I wrote back in 1989, between marriages, that was produced at LCP in 1996 with Linda Granger as the bedraggled but joyful Rag Baby — and now she’s brought it back to Starlight Dinner Theatre’s first “dessert only” show.
This show was praised back in ’96, by none other than the ever-impartial and wise Mike Hughes ;-}and I have high hopes it will be well attended in this remarkable revival, directed by Linda, and starring the talented Angela Dill and Chris Klaver.
"Garage Sale is a remarkable mini-gem. It's just about perfect in everything - its writing, direction, performances and length...The action takes place on one table of a garage sale...Tuxedo Teddy has a lofty price tag and immaculate condition. He has spent most of his life on a shelf, encased in his original box. Rag Baby has lived big and shows it. She's a tattered mess, with great memories. These two manage to bond - quite literally, thanks to Zussman's clever ending. You could sum up the show in a cliche: It is better to have loved and lost (an arm, some stuffing, etc.) than to never have loved at all. Still, Garage Sale is more. It has moments of great heart and humor.” Mike Hughes, 1996
ONLY ONE WEEKEND (March 13-15) AND “by popular demand” extended to include THE FOLLOWING FRIDAY March 20. Dessert is at 6:30 and show at 7:30 (Sundays dessert 1pm and show at 2pm) $20 includes a dessert buffet and beverages - show-only $15
There’s a kids price of $13 for 12 and under, but don’t bring little kids. There’s talk of what it means to be “anatomically correct” and a debate on the existence of Santa Claus… kind of pushes it to PG.

3/13-14-15 - And now for something well, not comPLETEly different, but a much smaller helping of funny and heart warming — served with a delicious dessert-only buffet at Starlight Dinner Theatre: THE GARAGE SALE has only two characters. I wrote this script, and am thrilled to see its “revival” 19 years after its first staging (with Linda Granger and Ron McNeill as doll and bear.) Now Linda directs the talented Angela Dill and Kris Klaver as they romp through this comedy of love and fear and loss and risk — literally and figuratively getting out of their box.

The Garage Sale coming to Starlight

2/21/2015

3/13-15 - Here’s the first of some probably-excessive promotion of my favorite old script, written over 20 years ago (and, oddly, more meaningful to me now, that it was when written) being revived at Starlight Dinner theatre for ONE WEEKEND ONLY March 13-14-15.
Lansing State Journal's review of the original production of "The Garage Sale" in 1996:
It has moments of great heart and humor.” (Mike Hughes)
Make plans to see this heart-warming one-act production written by Jane Shipley Zussman at Starlight Dinner Theatre - on a Starlight "Lite" night - Dessert Buffet only - March 13, 14 & 15. We are making it real by holding our own garage sale in the dining area and inviting audience members to donate to the garage sale with slightly used items (no clothing please). Join us on March 13, 14 or 15 and watch Tuxedo Teddy (Chris Klaver) and Rag Baby (Angela Dill) come to life. This production is directed by Linda Granger and is rated PG - please inquire for further details if the PG rating is a concern.
