To what extent can an inept theatre troupe ruin a classic? What would happen to a production if a major prop malfunctioned? How esoteric can absurdist theatre get? These questions and more are answered (and several others raised) in Coarse Acting Shows by Michael Green at LCC’s Black Box Theatre Feb. 15 through 23.
In his 1964 book “The Art of Coarse Acting,” the English journalist and humorist described the coarse actor as “one who can remember his lines, but not the order in which they come.” In these productions, that happens – and then some. Sets collapse, actors fail to appear and props fall to pieces, all while the casts carry on, fully believing the audience won’t notice.

Green has written several collections of coarse plays. LCC’s production, directed by John Lennox, is a 95-minute romp through five “masterpieces”: Moby Dick, an ambitious attempt to reduce the epic novel to a series of quick fire scenes; The Cherry Sisters, a desperately sincere skewering of Chekhov with a teary ending and a horribly faulty prop; Last Call for Breakfast, an avant-garde play shortened when an actor is in the wrong place during a black out; Henry the Tenth (Part Seven), a rarely performed tragedy with battle scenes that would amaze the Bard; and Il Fornicazione, finding new operatic tragedy when the entire orchestra fails to arrive.
The cast consists primarily of LCC students and alumni: Tobin Bates, Storm Boyer, Scott Crandall, Katie Dufort, Molly Joyce Epstein, Michelle Fliehman, Patrick Foster, Kailey LaGrow, Tony Nelson, Adam Pruden, Amelia Rogocka, Nick Smalley, Callie Smith, and Morgan Winston, joined by community actors Leo Poroshin and Heath Sartorius.
