Unfortunately, I was only able to see the final performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so… not much help from a “review” here — but I do want to report that the little old church on the north end of Pennsylvania has been sucessfully theatric-ized with a roomy stage replacing the small altar area.
This was one of their “youth” shows featuring kids 8-18. A group of 11 enthusiastic kids managed to play 22 roles with much running and fast costume changing. (Almost everyone doubled as an Oompa Loompa.) McKenna Stiles led the pack as the mysterious Willy Wonka. The challenging set pieces, boat, factory machines etc. were designed by Bill and Marisa Noise, with colorful costumes by Jess Burton — with help from a raft of volunteers and parents.
NOTE that Downeaster’s previously scheduled Nutcracker has been cancelled due to not enough auditioners. (I forgot to remove it from my emailed calendar, but that is corrected on the website All-Theatres Calendar http://www.greaterlansingtheatre.net)
BUT the other shows “must go on,” as they say, when MORE of you show up to auditions. Here’s another Youth show auditioning soon at Downeaster:
11/30-12/2 - 6:30 pm Thur/Fri & 10 am Sat - AUDITIONS (ages 8-18) for The Magic Flute, director: Kathryn Willis, 1120 N. Pennsylvania Ave - 48906. Audition workshop 530-630 on the Thursday night (Nov. 30) for $5 if any kids would like to know what to expect at their audition. And anyone who would like to read the script in advance can borrow it for a $10 deposit (in case of loss or damage). The kids will always have workshops the hour before the first night of auditions and the scripts are available for all but the last two shows of the season.
Downeaster’s January auditions include another Youth show as well as two Adult shows:
1/25-27 - 6:30 pm & 10 am Sat - AUDITIONS (ages 8-18) for The Princess and the Goblin; (ages 18+) for Betrayal and Rabbit Hole, director: Kathryn Willis - DT
