Lansing, Mich.–– The Renegade Theatre Festival 2019 is celebrating 14 years in 2019 with 14 new plays and the return of the Renegade Ruckus over two weekends Aug. 8-17 in Old Town Lansing.
The first weekend of Renegade takes place Aug. 8, 9 and 10 at the Red Cedar Friends Meeting Hall, the home of Renegade N.O.W. since its creation in 2010. Over the course of these three nights, 11 plays will be presented in the Hall’s two spaces at 7 and 9 p.m. No play is longer than an hour, most are 25-40 minutes, and there are two groupings of 10-minute plays themed “Breaking Down Barriers.”
The second weekend runs Aug. 15, 16 and 17 at the Urban Beat Events Center and features the winners in three play categories. All three are presented each night followed by short discussions: the one-act starts at 7 p.m., the 10-minute play at 8:15 p.m. and the full length at 9 p.m.
The festival culminates Saturday, Aug. 17 at 10:30 p.m. at Urban Beat with the Renegade Ruckus, a 24-hour new play challenge. Six writers receive prompts at 10:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16 with a 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 deadline to write a 10-minute play script. Then, six teams of directors and actors take those scripts and rehearse for performance at 10:30 p.m. Saturday evening. Drinks and snacks will be available for purchase at Urban Beat.
Renegade Theatre Festival is generously sponsored by the City Pulse and Lansing Community College, with support from the Red Cedar Friends Meeting Hall and the Urban Beat Events Center.
The Renegade organizing team includes Paige Tufford, coordinator of New Original Works. This year, N.O.W. submissions were limited to the first 250 scripts received. Paige oversaw the submission and selection process. Other organizers are Jeff Croff, coordinator of Renegade Ruckus, festival founder and co-artistic director Chad Swan-Badgero, and co-artistic-director Melissa Kaplan.
