Since September, nine students at Waverly High School have been digging into this ‘trivial comedy for serious people’ and their hard work is about to pay off. On December 6th The Importance of Being Earnest, a favorite among theatre and literature fans alike, will be presented at Waverly High School.
Possibly Wilde’s most recognizable play, audiences will delight in this wild comedy about two bachelors in Victorian London. Jack and Algernon maintain double lives to escape the tediousness of high society but soon find themselves in a wacky mess of romance, mistaken identity, and topped off with a preposterous origin story.
Audiences familiar with Waverly’s productions will be surprised by a few new faces amongst the recognizable upperclassmen. “The cast has been having a ton of fun with the wit and the outlandish circumstances that their characters find themselves in. It’s been great to watch the cast find new ways to make each other laugh.”
New to this side of Waverly’s stage, director Rita Deibler chose Earnest for its lighthearted comedy, something students and audiences could really have fun with. “It’s been an absolute delight to watch these students really dig into their characters, they’re beyond excited for people to see this show. You can really feel the energy during rehearsals, their ability and dedication have absolutely exceeded my expectations, it’s truly exciting.”
