The Monkey King
A World Premiere Devised Performance

The MSU Department of Theatre is excited to introduce it’s incoming class of theatre students in the 9th Annual Freshman Showcase: The Monkey King. This unique devised piece, directed by Deric McNish will make its world premiere in the Arena Theatre of the MSU Auditorium from December 3-6, 2015.

This play is the Department of Theatre’s contribution to MSU’s themed “Year of China,” an exploration of arts and culture meant to deepen cultural awareness, enrich the student experience, engage the community, and enhance global inclusiveness. Based on China’s most well-known pieces of classic literature, Journey to the West, this devised piece was a total collaborative effort between students, faculty and graduate mentors, and even members of the Peking Opera Company.

Students in the production worked closely with Master Qi Shu Fang’s Peking Opera Company during an intense workshop including makeup, style, and stage combat; as well as the staging of some of the scenes in the show! This devised Freshman Showcase is truly a global product and an incredible example of cross-cultural learning and collaboration.

Performances held in the Arena Theatre in the MSU Auditorium.

11/13 - 22 - Stage Door MSU Department of Theatre

By Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman

Tickets are now on sale
EAST LANSING – The MSU Department of Theatre is proud to present the comedy-drama by Ferber and Kaufman, Stage Door. All performances will be held in the Pasant Theatre at Wharton Center opening Friday, November 13, 2015.

One of the largest scaled productions the department has generated this year, Stage Door, will take over the Pasant Theatre with its beautifully sprawling scenic design by Elspeth Williams, 3rd Year MFA Design. The talented cast of Stage Door tallies a hearty thirty-two in total, with the majority of those roles filled by women. The action surrounds the residents of the Footlights Club, a rooming-house for actresses. Join these women as they laugh and cry together on their journey through Depression-Era New York.

Once again, director Rob Roznowski has connected multiple units across campus in this highly-collaborative artistic effort of Stage Door. Major contributors include Lisa Fine of The Center for Gender in Global Context (GenCen), Peter Glendinning of Art, Art History and Design, and Henry Brimmer  of Advertising. Fine spoke to the cast as part of their research about women’s professional opportunities in the 1930s. Glendinning, Prof. of Photography, worked with the women of the cast to recreate glamour shots of actresses of the time. And finally, Brimmer’s advertising students created mock Broadway and Holloywood posters of the 1930s using the very photographs taken by Glendinning. These partnerships, as well as the effort of the cast in researching real actresses of the time like Jean Harlow and Lucille Ball, creates a production rich with life, freedom of play and genuine relationships on stage.

Performances held in the Pasant Theatre at Wharton Center.
Directed by Rob Roznowski

EAST LANSING, Mich. ― A key part of Wharton Center’s and the MSU Department of Theatre’s mission is focused on creative collaboration. This idea has sparked a new artistic endeavor called the ĭmáGen project. ĭmáGen partners the MSU Federal Credit Union Institute for Arts & Creativity at Wharton Center with the MSU College of Arts and Letters’ Department of Theatre and local high schools. Together, they create two nights of extraordinary theatrical entertainment – highlighting the best of Broadway talent alongside East Lansing’s brightest students. This year, the group presents FOR TONIGHT – A Staged Concert, an indy-rock love story and the second smash ĭmáGen production.

Joe Barros, a New York theatrical director, has been hired to direct the performance, which will be presented on Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24 in Wharton Center’s Pasant Theatre. Tickets are available at the official source to purchase Wharton Center tickets online, whartoncenter.com, at the Auto-Owners Insurance Ticket Office, or by calling 1-800-WHARTON.

Brand new and freshly written, FOR TONIGHT takes place in a small Welsh village, where three siblings – Thomas, Haydon, and Nettie – find themselves living on their own following the death of their beloved parents. Armed with nothing but a guitar and empty pockets, Haydon heads off to Liverpool to try to fill the missing pieces in his life and find a place that he can truly call home.

Kirk Domer, Chair of the MSU Department of Theatre, says, “It’s a revolutionary program for MSU and high school students. It will allow them to work with Broadway professionals...and will attract the highest-quality students.” Bert Goldstein, Director of the MSUFCU Institute for Arts & Creativity, says “Most people who begin a career as an actor are certainly able to use the skills that they learned and apply them to other things. I’m hoping that all of this is about creating a well-rounded, extremely creative human being who can ask great questions, solve problems, and do all of the things that the arts can instill really well.”

The direct link to online ticket purchases is https://commerce.cashnet.com/cashnetc/selfserve/EditItem.aspx?PC=3751-GALA15&ItemCount=1 or you can call 517-355-6691.

The evening begins on the Fairchild Theatre stage on the MSU Campus. We'll start out with food and wine (Woody's -- yum!), then enjoy dessert from Le Bon Macaron and MSU Dairy.

While we're inside you can get raffle tickets to toss into drawings for some terrific prizes. They include a Vivian Dwyer planter, tickets to Wharton, Peppermint Creek, Coral Gables, Soup Spoon Cafe, Purple Rose, Williamston Theatre, Eat at State, Tipping Point Theatre, the State Room, jewelry, and art, including The Pubs of Sparta and a piece by local artist Barb Whitney. (There's more -- that's what I remember!)

We'll also have five items auctioned live by Williamston Theatre's Tony Caselli, our emcee. Drawing a lot of interest these days is a performance by "The Voice" finalist and MSU theatre grad (2002) Joshua Davis. Invite your friends to a party at your home and Josh will perform! If you haven't heard him, he's terrific -- and a really nice guy.

Our other live auction items include a Grand Hotel getaway, a made-for-the-event sculpture by Mark Chatterley, a glass creation by Craig Mitchell Smith, and a lovely pendant designed especially for the event and donated by Hampton Jewelers.

After dessert, guests will be the first to see a private preview of "Mr. Burns, a post-electric play" -- which will officially open the Summer Circle season the following night. You will be the FIRST audience to experience a theatrical presentation on the new Summer Circle Courtyard!

All this for $40 -- all of which goes to support FREE summer theatre at MSU throughout the month of June. This year's season, as always, includes shows for adults as well as families. It costs about $2,000 for each actor/technician/designer's fellowship for the summer season and funds from this event will support those fellowships.

MORE exciting developments from MSU:

Friends of Theatre Focus on Covering New  Summer Circle Courtyard Stage

MSU Friends of Theatre, a volunteer organization supporting the Michigan State University Department of Theatre in general and the Summer Circle Courtyard in particular, are hoping to raise $5,000 for a new stage cover to protect the new Summer Circle performance space for years to come.

The cost of the stage cover is $5,000. Donations are being managed through a MSU CROWDPOWER page at http://givingto.msu.edu/crowdpower/summer-circle-stage.cfm

Through generous donations Friends of Theatre are able to support nearly 30 MSU student actors, designers, managers and technicians to work at the craft they love and provide our community with free summer theatre. The Department of Theatre is constructing this stage cover to install theatrical scenery where students practice their art to produce plays and musicals each June.

“This marks the first season on the new Summer Circle stage,” says Department of Theatre chairperson Kirk Domer. “The courtyard was built through the generosity of community and university donations. It is our responsibility to protect and maintain the new performance space and the protective stage cover will help preserve it for years to come.”

The Summer Circle Theatre will begin its 55th season on Wednesday, June 10, with “Mr. Burns – a post electric play.” Guests attending the Friends of Theatre gala on Tuesday, June 9, will see a complete preview of the play, along with enjoying food, wine, silent auction and raffle. Proceeds from the gala support student fellowships for Summer Circle. Tickets and additional information are available at http://theatre.msu.edu or by calling 517-355-6691.

Summer Circle Theatre remains dependent on donations from loyal patrons and theatre fans to maintain the quantity and quality of its town-and-gown productions.

THE AGE OF AQUARIUS DAWNS WITH THE MUSICAL HAIR AT THE WHARTON CENTER
March 30, 2015
HAIR
The American Tribal Love - Rock Musical

Tickets are now on sale
EAST LANSING – Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, a Tony, Drama Desk, and Grammy Award winning sensation, arrives at Michigan State University. This iconic and groundbreaking milestone features chart-topping hits like “Aquarius”, “Let the Sun Shine In”, and “Good Morning Starshine.”

Hair captures the spirit of the 1960s with a loving look at a courageous group of young protestors. The “tribe” passionately tries to enact social change with powerful messages of anti-war activism, women’s rights, environmentalism, and racial equality. This show was controversial when it premiered and the battle against this “lewd and lascivious” masterpiece went all the way to the Supreme Court. Far from being dusty or irrelevant, these themes are as significant today as ever. This wild and masterful ride still asks us to question our beliefs, and its hopeful message of peace and love continues to rock our hearts and minds.

Creative highlights include psychedelic choreography by visiting alum Kellyn Uhl, musical direction by Pulsar winner Dave Wendelberger, a talented cast of 22 student actors and a 10-piece band. The design team brings 1968 back with stunning lighting by Shannon Schweitzer, set by Elspeth Williams, sound by Christopher Stowell and costumes by Daniel Hobbs. Directed by Deric McNish.

Hair contains nudity and adult content.

MSU’s Theatre2Film Project

2/1/2015

MSU’s Theatre2Film Project has the subtitle: “Three Hundred and Thirteen Possibilities” — which may be a few to many? It is an ambitious acting/writing/film-making collaborative experiment that comes out a little “too-many-cooks” to be satisfying for the audience — though it is undoubtedly educational and challenging for the students. Director and “Conceiver” Mark Colson is to be congratulated on the effort and coordination to incorporate multiple ideas and authors and a large number of actors — with the added interesting challenge to go on and turn this into a film. There is a writing group, an independent film study group and a spring 2015 class in Media Acting which will produce a film version of this script. It would be interesting to see a shorter version done back-to-back, live-actor version and film version. The film version may eventually be open to the public, but I doubt that I can keep the specifics in my head long enough to compare.

This vehicle showcases some good, naturalistic acting, with characters interesting enough that we want to know “what happens next” — but we don’t find out. Perhaps this non-resolution is a statement about the chaotic nature of life, “disconnection, loneliness, loss of idealism, finding direction, isolation created by technology” (possible themes listed in the director’s note) but it’s challenging for an audience meeting these characters for the first time and working hard to keep the various stories straight. Though the scene changes were remarkably fast and efficient (10 seconds or less) the multiple stories with many, short scenes felt disjointed, like a series of acting exercises. It “leaves you hanging” as I overheard one audience member comment.
Theatre2Film Project is in Studio 60, in the basement of MSU’s Auditorium building (corner of Farm Lane and Auditorium Rd.) Get tickets at the Farm-Lane Side box office — General Admission $10 — then go downstairs, and down the long hall beside the Arena to get to the Studio 60 venue.Remaining Performances:*Sunday, February 1, 2015 at 2:00pm

Freshman Showcase: NO Saturday, added Sunday

11/7/2014

FIRST of all, note this alert:

URGENT - MSU Dept. of Theatre Freshman Showcase performance on Saturday, Nov 8, 8:00 pm is CANCELLED(I just got this message today. I think it has something to do with football-related traffic trauma.)

Please be advised that due to unforeseen circumstances the Department of Theatre's performance of FRESHMAN SHOWCASE on Saturday November 8 at 8:00 pm has been cancelled. All ticket holders will be contacted by a Wharton Center Ticket Booth staff member to resolve this situation. To make up for this cancellation, there will be a performance ADDED on Sunday, Nov 9, at 12:00pm (in addition to the previously scheduled 2pm show) and tickets will be $10 SUGGESTED DONATION at the doors of the Studio 60 Theatre.  We apologize for any inconvenience if you were planning to come this Saturday, and hope you are able to make it to one of the Sunday performances.

And now, MY take on this widely and wildly assorted box of theatrical chocolates: Freshman Showcase “Power Plays: Make Me Famous” which I’m lucky I saw tonight, so I could spread the word before it’s over.  Sunday’s are the final performances noon and 2pm.

This is a short (70 minutes) cartoon, soap opera, reality-show spoof of “Fame” and what it will/won’t get us, interspersed with music, complete with guitars and multiple ukeleles. The opening and closing choral numbers are powerful, with the large chorus of 32. (The department invited all majors to participate in this production, and got quite a turnout.) The script, written by director Dionne O’Dell 17 years ago was reworked with input from MSU Freshmen, transfer students, new theatre majors and minors for this showcase resulting in a somewhat absurd, funny exploration of the road to fame and/or notoriety. The characters in the “mini series” is double cast. So the two Sunday shows will give both casts another go at this one-of-a-kind theatrical romp.

This is in Studio 60, in the basement of the MSU Auditorium Building (corner of Farm Lane and Auditorium; parking in the lot on Auditorium Road.) Get tickets at the box office facing Farm Lane (or, I guess, right at the door for that added show at noon) go downstairs and walk the long hall past the Arena to Studio 60, the new-ish “black box” performance space at MSU.
